Varian Medical Systems (VMS) (NYSE: VAR) is engaged in the design and manufacture of advanced equipment and software solutions for treating cancer with radiation. Methods include: medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and proton therapy. Varian also develops and manufactures x-ray tubes for original equipment manufacturers, replacement x-ray tubes, and flat-panel digital x-ray detectors for imaging in medical, scientific and industrial applications. The company has approximately 3900 employees and produces and markets products for treating cancer with radiation, including linear accelerators, treatment simulation and verification products, information management and treatment planning software. Varian produces a line of radiation therapy linear accelerators called the Clinac series; several variations of the Clinac treatment delivery system are installed in facilities all around the world.
History
Varian was founded in 1948 as Varian Associates by Russell H. and Sigurd F. Varian, William Webster Hansen, and Edward Ginzton to sell the Klystron, the first tube which could generate electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies, and other electromagnetic equipment. In 1999, it spun off its other businesses to concentrate on medical systems, and renamed itself to Varian Medical Systems.
Corporate affairs
Varian corporate headquarters reside in Palo Alto, California. Timothy Guertin has been the CEO since 2006 when he replaced Richard M. Levy, who had been with Varian for 37 years and still serves as chairman of the board of directors. Guertin holds a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California at Berkeley.[1] Varian operates a corporate philanthropy and charitable giving organization through the Varian Medical Systems Foundation. It operates within the Community Foundation of Silicon Valley (CFSV).
