Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft (also Munich Re in English) is the world's largest reinsurance company based in Munich, Germany. It was founded in 1880 by Carl Thieme, who also founded the Allianz insurance company.
The quick and unbureaucratical handling of claims after the San Fransisco earthquake in 1906 was the begin of Münchener Rück's path to becoming the world's largest reinsurer.
It was one of the major insurers of the World Trade Centre in New York City that was destroyed on 11 September 2001.
Its Canadian office is in downtown Toronto. Its US office is in Princeton, New Jersey.
