Revision as of 12:34, 29 August 2005

This page is a forum for requesting co-examination of copyright and licensing of content with other Wikipedians before it is included in a Wikipedia article.

For problems already existing in Wikipedia use Wikipedia:Copyright problems.

Using this page

Requesting examination

  1. Post a message defining the request on the talk page of the article where the content with unclear copyright would be inserted.
  2. Add {{copyrightexamination}} at the top of the request message on the talk page.
  3. Add a link pointing at the talk page to top of the List of open requests found below on this page, include a short description of the problem.

Answering

  • When you are sure it is legal to include the examined target in Wikipedia. Do so yourself. It's the best way of showing you're sure about it.
  • When you know it is illegal to include the content. Use the talk page at the target article to tell others about it.

List of open requests

  • This doesn't deal with one particular article, it's a general question I can't find the answer to on the Wikipedia fair use page. Can scanned covers of books published outside the United States, say, in Sweden, qualify as fair use? - Haukurth 1 July 2005 13:13 (UTC)
IANAL. In my view, yes, mainly because it qualifies under "amount and substaintiality". You are taking only a very small part of the copyrighted work. Furthermore, it has no "effect upon work's value" because you are not competing with the book and no one will look at the cover for free rather than buying the book. If anything, you're encouraging a purchase. As for it being Swedish, that's irrelevant. The servers are in the US and hence only have to follow US law, and the U.S. allows fair use.
