Dejan Stanković (Serbian Cyrillic: Дејан Станковић, born September 11, 1978) is a Serbian football player who plays for Inter Milan and is the current captain of Serbia national football team.

Background

Stankovic grew up in Zemun, a suburb of Belgrade. Both of his parents, Borislav and Dragica, had strong football backgrounds.

Club career

Red Star Belgrade

Dejan initially made his name with Red Star Belgrade, his hometown club for which he played in every age category. His first opportunity for the senior team came in the 1994–1995 season, in which he scored his first goal against FK Budućnost Podgorica. He soon became a first team regular and a firm fans favourite.

During the early nineties, Red Star was under an international ban because of a United Nations sanction imposed on FR Yugoslavia, meaning that the team could not compete in any European competition. The ban was lifted in the 1996/97 season, and Dejan played a huge part in a memorable 2-leg victory over 1.FC Kaiserslautern in the Cup Winners' Cup.

Before the start of the 1997/98 season, he was made squad captain, the youngest ever in the club's history.[citation needed]

S.S. Lazio

In the summer of 1998, he transferred for £7.5 million (DM24 million) to S.S. Lazio where he scored on his Serie A debut versus Piacenza in September 1998. In those years, Lazio had an all-star squad, with world class players in almost every position, but Dejan quickly secured a regular first-team place, despite competition from fellow midfielders Pavel Nedvěd, Juan Sebastián Verón and Roberto Mancini. He had five and a half successful seasons in the biancoceleste part of Rome, before finally signing for a high profile move to Internazionale in January 2004. During his time at Lazio, the team won virtually every title available.[citation needed]

FC Internazionale Milano

Many of the big-name teams in European football knew the financially struggling S.S. Lazio would have to sell Dejan in the near future, so there was fierce competition for his services during the 2003/04 summer transfer window. Juventus F.C. were favorite to getting Dejan's signature, but he eventually chose Internazionale. The fact that old Lazio teammate Roberto Mancini was already at Inter may influenced his decision. In early February 2004 Stanković played his first match for Inter - a Serie A clash against A.C. Siena.

On May 7 2006, again versus Siena in Serie A, he played his 100th match for Inter.

Stanković showed good form during the 2006-7 Serie A campaign, scoring some decisive goals. His strike against Catania and his memorable goal against city rivals AC Milan have enhanced his reputation with the fans of Inter Milan.

According to the official ratings of the La Gazzetta dello Sport Stanković has been selected as the man of the match five times so far during this years Serie A campaign.[citation needed] Stanković renewed his contract on February 2 2007, with Inter securing his services until at least 2010.

On May 29, 2008 it was reported[1] that Liverpool had made a bid for Stankovic.

He was said to be unhappy at the dismissal of coach Roberto Mancini who had brought him to the club and his future has since come under much speculation. New coach Jose Mourinho is believed to be chasing some of his midfielders from previous clubs with names like Deco and Frank Lampard being used on numerous occasions. This has put Stankovic's future at Internazionale into more doubt.

He has now been linked to Manchester City and Everton of England.

International career

Stanković made his international debut, for FR Yugoslavia, against South Korea on April 22, 1998. He was the first captain for the Serbia national football team.
