Giacobbo Rodríguez Pereire (1715-1780) was born in western Spain, of a Spanish-Jewish family in the old province of Estremadura, which has been partitioned into the provinces of Badajoz and Cáceres. The area in which he was born is populated by an abundance of poor people, but it has produced conquistadores and soldiers such as Cortés and Pizarro. |

He was one of the inventors of the deaf-mute language, and he is credited with being the first person to teach a deaf-mute to speak. In 1759, he was made a member of the Royal Society of London. His grandsons, Emile Pereire (1800-75) and Isaac Pereire (1806-80), were French bankers who encouraged the construction of the first railway in France in 1835. In 1852, they founded the Société du Crédit Mobilier. |
