Garry's Mod or GMod is a modification for the Source engine. It is a physics sandbox game that allows the player to manipulate objects and experiment with physics.[1] The construction of complex machines within the game can also be a contemporary spin on the Rube Goldberg machine principle.
Garry's Mod requires the user to own one Source game, such as Half-Life 2 or Team Fortress 2, and that the Source game has been used at least once. This ensures that the necessary program files are provided to Garry's Mod. The game can also be bought in a pack over Steam bundled with other source games.
Overview
Garry's Mod was created In 2005 by Garry Newman. It originally started out as a mod that allowed users to rope things together, and make the pistol shoot out manhacks. Since then, the game has gone through eleven versions, each with new features. The game is currently on version Garry's Mod 2007 (Although also known as "Garrys Mod 10" and due to a large update, "Garrysmod 11", although this is false).
The current version of Garry's Mod receives regular updates via Valve's Steam service. Garry's Mod has been available for purchase on Steam since November 29, 2006.[2]
In October 2007, a version of Garry's Mod using the Source 2007 engine, nicknamed Garry's Mod 2007, began development. On January 15, 2008, Garry's Mod was updated to the new engine.[3]
Community
The majority of content and gameplay value in Garry's mod is user created, and the directory structure has been designed to allow add-ons. New models, tools, weapons, levels, and game modes (such as Roleplay, Sandbox, Stranded, Education, SpaceBuild, MelonRacer, and Zombie Survival) all expand the features of Garry's Mod. A great deal of user collaboration for new add-ons and creations takes place at the Facepunch Studios forums, but most files are stored at garrysmod.org, which is currently the dominant Garry's Mod file hosting website.[citation needed]
Garry's Mod comics
A popular use for Garry's Mod is making comics, using the ragdoll posing features. Many comics can also be found on the official Garry's Mod forums or on Youtube.
Awards
Garry's Mod 9 has won three Mod of the Year awards:
- GameSpy: PC Mod of the Year 2005 (December 2005)
- PCGamer US - Best Mod 2005 (January 2006)
- ModDB: Mod of the Year! (January 2006)
