"The Bluegrass is Always Greener"

The Bluegrass is Aways Greener is episode 113 in the Fox animated television series King of the Hill.

Plot

As Connie is being forced to practice her violin, she catches a tune outside and goes out to see who is playing that different music. She wanders upon Hank playing Bluegrass and wants to play along.

The gang decides to form a band with her as the lead fiddle player, and she gives it all she's got, really catching on fast to the fun spirit of bluegrass. Hank decides that she is good enough to take to the annual Bluegrass contest over in Branson. All agree, except for Kahn. Connie has to hide her love of Bluegrass from her father, who disapproves.

Meanwhile, Bobby is doing all that he can to try and fit in with his dad's social activities, to no avail. Connie decides to lie to her parents and go to Branson with the gang. She tells her parents that she is going to a classical competition for school and tells Hank that she got the OK from Kahn.

Hank starts to take the competition too seriously and harps on Connie about practice, just as Kahn does. So, Connie decides she would rather not play, and runs off. Bobby meets Yakov Smirnoff, and sells him a joke for twenty dollars. After giving Bobby the money, Dale attacks Yakov with mace and handcuffing him to the railing. Hank is unimpressed, and doesn't even believe Bobby, thinking that he took the money from his wallet.

Kahn finds out about the bluegrass but also finds out that Connie and Bobby have run off to perform somewhere on the streets. Hank apologizes to the kids as Charlie Daniels performs with the band in Connie's place.

Trivia

• The title alludes to the phrase The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and the bluegrass musical genre.
• When Hank brings out his guitar Dale asks Hank "What are doing going down to the crossroads to sell his soul to the devil." As in Robert Johnson's song "Crossroad Blues".
• When Boomhauer starts to sing, the name of the song is "Blue Moon of Kentucky", Kentucky's official bluegrass song.
• Boomhauer's singing voice is portrayed by Vince Gill.
