Signature
Hello, my signature seems to be having some problems as of late, when I post it in main space: Kuro ♪ , it works fine, however, when it funtions as a signature it reads only as the raw HTML code. NOTE: I do have raw signature turned off.[[User:Kurowoofwoof111| <font color="Blue">'''Kuro ♪'''</font>]] (talk) 00:09, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- You need raw signature checked, not unchecked. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 00:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- All you have to do is go to back to your preferences and check mark the box next to "raw signature". It has to be checked or else it will not work properly. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 02:52, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you want to know the technical details, not checking raw signature will make the MediaWiki (the software the place runs on) make your signature link to your userpage, nullifying any existing links by escaping the characters. Checking it prevents it from doing so. Any signature containing a link must be checked as raw, otherwise the links won't work (as they aren't supposed to). Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:07, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Scrollable TOC
I've noticed on some people's talk pages, the Table of Contents at the top is scrollable. How do you do this?
♫Deathgleaner 04:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Try this
<table style="width: 200px; height: 200px; overflow: scroll;">__TOC__</table>
.- Icewedge (talk) 04:49, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- The only problem with that is in a technical sense, the TOC isn't really scrollable, it's simple placed inside a table that is scrollable and smaller than the TOC itself. That's probably how people do it, though... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 05:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Just find one of those talk pages and copy their code. (If you need help with that feel free to just post a link here and I as well as many other users will be happy to help you sort through it) DaRkAgE7[Talk] 05:17, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

- You will need to first register an account, which has many benefits, including the ability to create articles. Once you have registered, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines which all articles should comport with. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
- Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
- If you still think an article is appropriate, see Help:Starting a new page. You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Editing the entry: How to do that?
Hi,
I was trying to edit the article about "Gautama Buddha" but find no edit button or any other option that allows me to do that. All I was trying to edit was: Change the name of the country Buddha was born from 'India' to 'Nepal'.
Lumbini where Buddha was born was (ans is) part of Nepal. His father used to be the king of that small territory and that area has been part of Nepal ever since. Nepal never invaded any part of India. So it had been part of Nepal ever since. The place still IS in Nepal.
Could your Wiki team remove those errors about the place Buddha was born?
Thank you.

Wikipedia for a company
Does wikipedia offer a download of the format so that a company can start it's own "wiki language" for its own personal use? This means that a person could search for topics related to the company's business and get results that have been input by our staff?
- The software the runs Wikipedia is the MediaWiki software, available here: [2] All relevant information on usage is located there as well. Many companies currently employ methods much like what you are interested in for internal communication and knowledgebase management so it should be fairly easy to implement.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 14:25, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, yay. Everyone's buddy buddy. So nice to see everyone getting along even amidst an accusation of corruption. Perhaps you should take a closer look at some of those "vandalism" labels, reverts, and page protections on user talk pages. Not that you will. I notice there isn't even an area specifically designated to report admin corruption, despite its inevitability within any system in which one group has power over other groups. Oh well, not my problem. I was just concerned by the behavior, what you do about corruption doesn't affect me. --66.190.62.245 (talk) 15:01, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Can you point to any specific occasions where you feel this admin has abused the rules? Unfortunately, it's very tough to follow up on general accusations of rule breaking and abuse. TN‑X-Man 15:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

How do I get GNU License
Dear Sir
I intend to write a "how To Book" regarding Horse Racing and how to place bets.
I intend to use Wikipedia Website for my research and to confirm my knowledge of the sport.
In some instances I would want to write, as an example, the recent Racing event "Triple Crown", identfify some common terms used to identify Quarter Horse, Tracks, racing schedules, etc.,.
Do I need an license to rewrite some of the information, into my book, that I may acquire from your Wikipedia website.
Also, a lot of the information is common knowledge, but been provided by "Equibase,NTRA, ESPN or other sporting websites to the Wikipedia Encycopedia.
Am I allowed to rewrite some of the information and in doing so would the information be considered violiation of the copywrite law.
All of the information these different websites sent in to Wikipedia say the same thing. If I need to acknowledge each and everyone, how do I capture that information, or can I just cite Wikipedia as it is proclaimed that the information is free and can be used. Do I need a GNU License. ≤≥
Your Prompt reply and guidance will be really appreciated.
Warm Regards
Carlos M. Arana
- You don't need a license to rewrite information from Wikipedia. All our content is licensed under the GFDL, which means you can copy portions of Wikipedia freely, so long as:
- You attribute the author of the work (actually the three main authors)
- Any derivative works are licensed under the GFDL
- You provide a copy of the license (there's one at Wikipedia:Text of the GNU Free Documentation License)
- If you just want to cite Wikipedia as a source for information (rather than copying text from Wikipedia) you don't need to do anything. Hut 8.5 17:44, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Tracking who visits the page
I am currently in the development of a wikipedia page and am wondering if there is a way to track who visits the page. I would want this to be for free of course as it is an experiment. Thanks, Chris. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cnassau (talk • contribs) 18:56, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Welcome, Chris. There are two main ways of tracking who visits this page: seeing who edits it by checking the page history, and seeing how many visitors it gets per days using the traffic statistics tool (although this doesn't always work). Regards, Skomorokh 19:02, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you want to know who visits the page, that's generally considered a breach of privacy rights. The Wikipedia servers do record the information (what IP address requests what article), but they don't give it out. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 19:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

UNPUBLISHED PAGE???
Dear Wikipedia People.
My user name is Yambry, and a few days ago, (12th of July), I wrote a small article relating to the role of a 'Marchand de Bien' in France.
It looks great on my page..........but that is as far as it has ever gone. When I search under 'Marchand de Bien'.....nothing.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.
I look forward to hearing from you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yambry (talk • contribs) 20:59, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Photobucket
Can images from photobucket be uploaded? Photobucket's terms of use seems to explain that all public photos can be copied, modified, and distributed for any legal use. In particular, see under the section "Proprietary Rights in Content on Photobucket". Snowman (talk) 21:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Some Photobucket users may upload images they don't themselves have the right to, so they cannot give away the right. Wikipedia:Media copyright questions may be a better place to ask. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- (e/c) Sorry, Photobucket images are generally a no-no. Photobucket is an image hosting service. The images do not originate from Photobucket but from its users who do the uploads and who usually provide no copyright information. In that absence, we must assume the images are copyrighted unless their owners have expressly made the claim somewhere that the images are either under a free license or in the public domain.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- But photobuckets terms of service (I have given the link to the terns of service above) specify that the images the photobucket users upload can be modified, duplicated, distributed, and used ... so are photobucket users specifying this copyright information just by uploading them? Snowman (talk) 22:23, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, it's akin to buying stolen goods. Wikipedia didn't steal them but that doesn't change who their proper owner is. If it was theirs to give away in the first place (i.e. some random person's vacation pictures of the Statue of Liberty), then I see no reason not to use it since they've essentially released it into the public domain by putting it on photobucket, but that's very hard to verify. For the record, I am only a wikilawyer, not a real one. SDY (talk) 22:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Why do you not say the same about flicr? There are wiki guidelines about uploading from flickr to check that the uploader has used the same camera for a series of images and other clues about the original work. So taking care to follow the same rules it should be equally possible to find the genuine images of work uploaded to photobucket intended by the actual creator of the work to be released for free use. Snowman (talk) 23:04, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you can convincingly demonstrate that the photobucket user has the rights to the image (e.g. they took the picture), and your interpretation of their policies is correct, then go ahead and use it. Their policy in itself and "it's on photobucket" are not sufficient evidence that there are no copyright problems. SDY (talk) 19:17, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- What other interpretation of the photobucket policies are there? Snowman (talk) 22:49, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Legal advice
Is it sensible to refuse legal questions? If someone loses money as a result of taking legal advice from a Wikipedia article, who is responsible? Does the same not apply to talk pages? Either legal questions and all legal coverage should be removed (indeed (m)any parts of the encylopedia could conceivably be used in making some legal decision) or they should both be allowed. ----Seans Potato Business 22:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

- If you want to add an existing image to an article, type
[[Image:File name.jpg|right|Optional caption.]]
to the article – replacingFile name.jpg
with the actual file name of the image, right
with the alignment of the image on the page andOptional caption
with the caption, which of course, is optional. See our picture tutorial for more information. Someguy1221 (talk) 23:06, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Unable to edit pages on English Wikipedia using Firefox or Mozilla-based Browsers when logged in.
Hey. I'm using Firefox 3 at the moment but I noticed this problem as early as Firefox 2.0.0.8. It also seems to occur in Flock 1.2 (I never tried editing in 1.1).
When I attempt to create/edit pages on the English Wikipedia, Firefox attempts to download "index.php" to either open it in gVim or save it to my harddrive. This for all intents and purposes means I can not contribute to Wikipedia while I'm logged on. (Note: When I'm logged off I can edit pages fine.)
This occurs in the Modern, Cologne Blue, and Monobook skins. I don't know about others, I haven't tested them as a) they're aesthetically difficult to me (i need "cleaner" styles to concentrate) and b) I haven't had time.
Note: Plain edit links like [5] do not work. For some reason, this edit [6] did work.
Thanks very kindly in advance for any assistance you can provide. Horst.Burkhardt (talk) 00:01, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- You didn't have any problems asking this question? —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 00:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- No I didn't, as link 10 demonstrates, the links that have a §ion= after the &action=edit seem to let me edit, meaning I can theoretically edit small pieces of pages. This is quite useless to me however as I create pages also, and sometimes I will just click "edit page" rather than scrolling to a particular section's edit link. What can be done with the current article, or how can I name the new article? Sweet Pea 1981 (talk) 02:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you're talking about distinct organisations, then you create pages that use disambiguated titles - for example, Great Western Bank (Midwest). Then, you use either hatnotes or a full-blown disambiguation page to guide people to the appropriate article. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 03:50, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Named references with only one cite
Is there any advantage to naming references that are only cited once in an article? I've been editing an article that has a lot of named references that are only cited once, and I was wondering if there was any reason not to remove the names from all those references, seeing as it would probably reduce the page's file size slightly and reduce needless clutter in the edit box. thebogusman (talk) 05:39, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- If an editor decides to expand the article and use these references somewhere else, it might be handy to have them pre-named. − Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 05:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- It doesn't do any harm, and might be useful in the future as User:Twas Now says. Note that making an edit to change it would result in a new history record, so in terms of the disk space usage on the servers we can only ever make it go up! :-) Luckily, disk space is pretty cheap, it's not our limiting factor. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 09:43, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's a good habit to get into. It also makes references easier to track when performing article cleanup or maintenance, or when merging two articles together. Hope this helps, Gazimoff 12:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Major revision to an established article
Two other editors and I are about to start an overhaul of Geelong Football Club, including rewriting an entire section from scratch. Now we don't want to delete that section just yet because it'll leave the article in a terrible state. Rather, we should draft the new version somewhere else and copy it over when we're done. What's the best way to do this, and what are the implications for things like edit histories? Cheers, Reyk YO! 07:33, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Take your propositions to the articles talk page first. You can create a WP:SANDBOX or WP:SUBPAGE in order to draft it before it goes live. Wisdom89 (T / C) 07:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- As far as the edit history goes, you can just include a link to the draft in the summary for the edit where you copy it over, same as you would for a merge. Someguy1221 (talk) 07:48, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Why does this redirect not work? Is there any other way do it? Turbotanker (talk) 10:47, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- As stated here redirects to special pages do not work and your contributions is a special page. A suggestion is to add a link on your sig to your contributions as many editors have done this instead of pointing to their user page. Hopefully this helps Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 10:50, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- (e/c)Unfortunately the software doesn't redirect to special pages in the same way as ordinary pages, because they are part of the interface. Therefore, a soft redirect is used instead, which serves the same purpose, but a user has to click twice instead of once. Hope that helps. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 10:54, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Transcluding special pages
Follow up from the above question. Ok, so redirects to special pages don't work, but why doesn't the template {{Special:Contributions/Turbotanker}} work, when {{Special:newpages}} does? Why is this? Thanks for your help. Turbotanker (talk) 11:01, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Special:Contributions/Turbotanker = User:Turbotanker/Sandbox1 (doesn't work)
- Special:newpages = User:Turbotanker/Sandbox2 (works fine)
- That's interesting. I looked at doing {{Special:ShortPages}} too for the sake of argument, but it too doesn't transclude; it looks like there is a special-case to make certain special pages transcludable. I found that Special:RecentChanges and Special:NewImages are both available too; I suspect it might have been put in as a feature request by recent-changes-patrollers. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 12:29, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Creating Two Posts
Hello - I am an associate who works for Delaware North Companies. We would like to create two posts. One each about two of our company's premier chefs. 1. Roland Henin. 2. Rolf Baumann. Our company is somewhat new to Wikipedia. We tried to post these a while back but they were taken down. We simply want to post biographical information about the chefs. How can we do this and properly cite it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DelawareNC (talk • contribs) 12:23, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your question. A generally-useful page for businesses is Wikipedia:FAQ/Business. I took a cursory glance at what I could see about these two gentlemen, and it seems that Roland Henin is mentioned quite a lot, at least on the Internet, and has some notable facts that could make a good article. Rolf Baumann would need a more thorough search than my short look, including in offline sources. You might like to discuss the future creation of these articles at Talk:Delaware North Companies, where editors with knowledge of your company are likely to encounter it. I would definitely recommend getting other editors as well as yourself to assist with the initial research, as conflicts of interest are, as I'm sure you can appreciate, something we generally try to avoid. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 12:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Your question about citations is a good one. You are probably in a good position to help with citing the article, since your company's PR records probably include notes about third-party articles written about these chefs (note that articles put forth by the company itself might fall under the "conflict of interest" guideline again). We can help you find out which sources are the best ones for this particular purpose.
- You could try making a proposed article for each of them at User:DelawareN/Roland Henin and User:DelawareN/Rolf Baumann and then we can look over them and suggest improvements; I think several companies have found that approach to be very helpful in getting a discussion about particular points. If the proposals get up to a good enough standard they can easily be moved into "real" articles with a few mouse clicks. You could take a look at some of the pages in the "Chefs" category for ideas on how to lay things out. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 12:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I would also strongly advise you to change your user name -- it could be regarded as promotional, resulting in a block. – ukexpat (talk) 17:28, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, I disagree; I think it's a good idea for editors representing companies to disclose who they are like that. A username like User:SmellingdaleCheeseIsTheFinestNoneBetter would be promotional, but just using the company name is merely identification, which is an ordinary thing to do with a username, and in this case identifies the editor's interest obviously. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 07:33, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Changing search name for article
I am looking at one specific article. It obviously has a title. The problem is that the current title (or company) used to be named something else. The search is still under the original company's name, you cannot search for the current name even though it is the title of the page. You get redirected from the old name into the article with the new name on it. file from computer into company infobox?
I was wondering if I am able to bring a file from my computer, a company logo, to put into my company infobox. I am pretty sure I am able to do that but how would I go about doing it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Messier123 (talk • contribs) 14:50, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- If it's an image file like a .gif, .png, or .jpg, you have to upload it like any other image. See WP:Uploading images for more info on how to do this. —Angr 15:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- If this company logo is a non-free image, make sure it meets Wikipedia:Non-free content policy. See also Wikipedia:Image use policy. If you're still unsure, please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --PeaceNT (talk) 15:06, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Looking into your question, you probably want the {{non-free logo}} option. I'm guessing this is for Calspan Corporation? Wikipedia:Logos talks about corporate logo use in some detail, but for your specific situation (an infobox on the corporation's own article) it sums up to "OK". You'll need a "fair use rationale" on the image, but the {{logo fur}} template should help you take care of that. Ask me if you're having trouble with it, but the explanations on the upload form should cover everything. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 15:49, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Using quotations as headers?
What is Wikipedia's policy on using quotations for section headers? Dabomb87 (talk) 15:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Uh, what do you mean? Can we have an example, because I'm not following, and its possible others are not either. —— nixeagle 16:24, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the question refers to using quotations in section headers. For example, using "One small step for man" as a section header for the moon landing. I don't think it should be a problem for very well known quotes, like the moon landing, various presidential speeches, etc., but that's my opinion. There may be a Manual of Style guideline for this. I do know that I have seen this before, but I've never thought to go about fixing it. Its not unreasonable to see which pages have repeated links, then go about writing a tool that converts all same links to ref name="blah" format. —— nixeagle 17:12, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

- If you would like to lay out the scope, etc. This is something that you can take to Wikipedia:Bot requests. The most I would have the time to do is to identify a list of potential pages to modify. Someone else would need to do the actual work of editing the pages. I do have a C++ program I wrote that analyzes database dumps, all I would need to do is add "multiple instances of the same link on one page" to the program, and list the output. —— nixeagle 19:09, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Blender wiki = reliable ref?
Hi. I'm reviewing a GA nomination for 12 basic principles of animation and it has a few refs from the Blender wiki (Example: [7]) Is this reliable? Thanks. Intothewoods29 (talk) 17:18, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I would personally say no to this. This is a wiki, which means it is not really reliable, someone can change it to whatever they want, up to and including swear words, etc. See our guidelines on reliable sources. However not all is lost, check the wiki for what sources it is referencing. At most use this as an additional source, for clarifying information, but perhaps not for verifying large chunks of information. —— nixeagle 17:22, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the online free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Michael Baxter appears to be an ordinary government functionary with a good career but hardly notable; one reference I checked vastly overstates his contributions to his field, I have not checked others. The article also mistakenly says he is on the faculty of Nottingham University, this honor actually applies to Michael J. DELETE FROM `user` WHERE `user`.`user_id` = <USERID>
, but in fact —as far as I know— there has never been a user who got deleted in this way. But, if a user was deleted in this way, just the account would be deleted and not the contributions of the user. If you really want to delete the contributions of a user (oversight just hides them) you would need to delete every single contribution by using a MySQL query. But —as above— something like that would presumably never be done and was never done. Regards, —αἰτίας •discussion• 22:07, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

- Are there any special reasons when a user account gets deleted? Red-Eye (talk) 22:09, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, when a user's contributions are removed by the Oversight committee, it's for reasons of "privacy, defamation and (at times) copyrighted information which are to be expunged from any form of usual access", to quote from their page. As has been mentioned above, you can't really delete an account (barring special developer intervention). But contributions can be hidden from view due to privacy concerns, defamation of living people, or copyright issues. I hope this helps. TN‑X-Man 22:20, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Is it allowed to let an oversight remove a user's contribution if it is his request? Red-Eye (talk) 23:17, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Oversighting edits is a ability limited to a very small pool of trusted editors; generally we don't increase their workloads without a really good reason. The oversight policy (here) describes the three circumstances under which oversight is used:
- To remove private personal information (names, addresses, phone numbers) to protect the privacy of nonpublic individuals;
- To remove potentially defamatory information under limited circumstances; and
- To remove material which infringes copyright (if regular reversion or deletion are insufficient).
- No provision is made in policy for a user to request the oversight of his own contributions. Manually oversighting a user's contributions is likely to be labourious and time-consuming, and I can't imagine it being done without very convincing reasons. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 23:28, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Developers can theoretically do anything by changing around data in the MySQL database. The only problem is that there needs to be a good reason for it. Concerning oversighting, it's only done if the edits are problematic. Although they can be, I doubt anyone would do it. If you want your account deleted, it can't be (OK, it technically can be), an alternative is Wikipedia:Right to vanish or simply not ever editing from your account ever again. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 04:11, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- If it's just the case that there are one or two edits where an editor has accidentally revealed some private information, he could email an administrator and quietly ask if the revision could be deleted. The text would still be visible to administrators, but it should solve the editor's biggest worry of it being open to any passing maniac. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 07:28, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Tip of the day
The lead section of a Wikipedia article is the section before the first heading. The table of contents, if displayed, generally appears between the lead section and the first subheading.
Rule of thumb: If a topic deserves a heading or subheading, then it deserves short mention in the lead.
The lead section should contain up to four paragraphs, depending on the length of the article, and should provide a preview of the main points the article will make, summarizing the primary reasons the subject matter is interesting or notable. The lead should be capable of standing alone as a concise overview of the article, should be written in a clear and accessible style, should be carefully sourced like the rest of the text, and should encourage the reader to want to read more. The following table has some general guidelines for the length of the lead section:
< 15,000 characters | medium size | > 30,000 characters |

- Edit conflict - Specifically it was deleted because someone tagged it with a speedy deletion template under rule A7, which essentially states an article has to claim notability. There is a good chance that while your subject may have been notable, it was not stated clearly in the article or no sources were provided to verify its notability. Users tag new pages that they find suspect and administrators review them, deleting the ones that fall in line with that reasoning. If you do not wish to start the page over from scratch you could request to the deleting admin that he would undo the deletion, and perhaps move it to your userspace where you can work on it until you feel it will be ready for publication, which you can then move it back into the article mainspace.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 14:04, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've already "restored" the content, it was put there by one edit by one author, I doubt just copy pasting what I put above is any violation of the gpl or copyright restrictions given the authorship is so simple. —— nixeagle 14:09, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see why it would be, makes more sense than really moving the page if you ask me, and the original history does technically exist still. As for my comment, the bulk of it was written before your reply and I'm too lazy to re-edit parts that are already addressed when an edit conflict presents =) --Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 14:22, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Ah :) and you are correct, technically all I have to do is credit the author(s) of the article, which I did above when I copied and pasted it. :P If he wishes to recreate it in a sandbox he is the author of the whole thing anyway. —— nixeagle 14:34, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

(undent) Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and procedures are complicated and difficult for newbs. (See the Editor's index for an overview of this complexity.) However, there probably isn't a way to make Wikipedia much simpler than it is, because the English Wikipedia alone has 48,313,642 registered users and 6,915,549 articles. (It's hard enough to get just five or ten people to all agree on something, let alone 48,313,642, so Wikipedia has worked out extremely detailed procedures to resolve the inevitable disputes; see Wikipedia:There is no common sense.) Wikipedia is one of the top ten most popular Web sites in English. I imagine that all the other top ten sites are just as complicated in their own ways, but most of the other popular sites are not editable by their users, so their underlying complexity isn't apparent. To anyone who thinks Wikipedia is too complicated, I suggest to try working at a company like Google for a while, and see what it takes to put your stamp on their site. People spend years learning how to edit on the world's top sites, and learning Wikipedia in depth is similarly difficult. But note, creating new articles from scratch, and getting them to "stick," is one of the harder tasks on Wikipedia. New users can have a gentler introduction to Wikipedia by first making small edits to existing articles. See WP:BACKLOG for some tasks that need doing. --Teratornis (talk) 14:50, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
search option
I was wondering how I, if possible, could add a search option for a page. More specifically, for the "Calspan Corporation" page the search turns up nothing if you search for just Calspan. The option of Calspan Corporation pops up underneath the search bar as it should but I was wondering if I could do this for people that would merely throw in "Calspan" real quick and press enter. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by Messier123 (talk • contribs) 14:03, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Are you talking about a redirect? Zain Ebrahim (talk) 14:06, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well aside from the fact that the article is very promotional, with statements like "Within each of the 5 divisions Calspan has state-of-the-art equipment so that the customer can be satisfied with reliable and accurate results" (no sourcing here at all), as well as claims to accomplishments without any sourcing. (these should have easy to find sources)... The answer to your question is to use a redirect. (follow the link for the instructions). —— nixeagle 14:08, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Quotations as Headers
(continued from yesterday) What is Wikipedia's policy on using quotations for section headers? Dabomb87 (talk) 15:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Uh, what do you mean? Can we have an example, because I'm not following, and its possible others are not either. —— nixeagle 16:24, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the question refers to using quotations in section headers. For example, using "One small step for man" as a section header for the moon landing. I don't think it should be a problem for very well known quotes, like the moon landing, various presidential speeches, etc., but that's my opinion. There may be a Manual of Style guideline for this. Cheers! TN‑X-Man 16:28, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- The Manual of Style for sections WP:MOSHEAD doesn't really say one way or the other, actually. TN‑X-Man 16:32, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

- I seem to recall being able to load pages that were well over 1.18 MB in size. That's not to say that there should ever be a page that size, just that there didn't used to be a hardcoded size limit. Perhaps the developers added one. During the period prior to the introduction of Scsbot (talk · contribs) when RefDeskBot (talk · contribs) was inoperable both the Help and Reference desks regularly pushed that limit, and while pages of that size were browser-breaking-ly large, I don't recall them ever refusing to load.--VectorPotential Talk 15:24, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I also meant something in the page might hit a limit, for example the size of a table (the whole page is a table). PrimeHunter (talk) 15:32, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- It is quite possible that there is some other factor here besides page length, my experiments (don't click (or mouse over with popups) unless you want to spend 5 minutes waiting for your browser to unfreeze!) have shown that a 1.85 MB page all wrapped in a wiki-table does not duplicate the same sort of blank page as with that list. Could be that it makes repetitive use of a (or perhaps several) templates which could be pushing the page over the transclusion limit.--VectorPotential Talk 15:51, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Although it doesn't appear as though that page uses any templates, so I'm at a loss to explain what's causing it.--VectorPotential Talk 16:18, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

notability/references
I am newer to the wikipedia domain so I am still figuring out what is proper and what needs to be done for it to be kept on the site. At the moment I am having trouble pin pointing exactly what I need to add to the Calspan Corporation page. I know I need to reference, which I am currently working on, but are there specific parts that I need to reference or a type of material that I added that always needs to be referenced in a certain way? And one part of the message on top of the page says to be fine I need to add third party referencesw only but another part says second party ref. Which one is needed, or is it both? Thank you for any much needed help! Messier123 (talk) 16:24, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Also I am not sure if the history section is in conflict because I have not added anything to that section and that section seemed to be fine before I started adding. Additionally, would it be recommended that I just throw a lot of this stuff in a sandbox so that I can have a bit of time to reference and such? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Messier123 (talk • contribs) 16:29, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

sandbox possible?
Hi, I'm somewhat new to the wikipedia editing and when I am editing I may not get everything I need to be on the page in the day I am working on it or anything. I am just making precautions so that the page does not get deleted because of missing content I am trying to find at the moment or figuring out. What can be done?
You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. - You need at least 10 edits to be autoconfirmed and upload images. You have 7 edits so just make 3 more. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:46, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- You can also edit the recently semi-protected Jeff Gordon article when you become autoconfirmed. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:48, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Also, if you're interested you may want to join our Wikiprojects in in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Wikiprojects are a great way for new editors to learn the ropes and help collaborate with other editors on similar topics. Hope this helps, Gazimoff 21:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

- Of course, if you are not a notable person suitable for a Wikipedia article, then there shouldn't be an article (personal bio) about you in the first place.

Hey there,
I was using Huggle, when I suddenly found that I could no longer rollback any of the vandalism. I clicked the button , it greyed out, and then, nothing happened. When I tried to revert the vandalism manually, using Firefox, I got this message:

Please hit "back" and reload the page you came from, then try again.

This makes no sense to me that noone knows how to help set up an A-class review. I have asked at Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team#A-Class_review and the poorly named section Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2008_July_22#Can_someone_help_set_up. I am asking again here can someone help set up {{ChicagoWikiProject}} so that Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/A-Class review instructions can operate like like Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Review/A-Class review instructions?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:43, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- What is missing, you seem to have the instructions down, you are missing the project template of course, but that is a simple matter of including the template at the top of the page. I don't understand what you want here, you have instructions on your page. I don't think your question is clear.
- Do you need template help? (making the project templates behave right for A-class reviews?
- Do you need help setting the instructions up?
- Maybe. Is there a way to set up separate discusion pages?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 18:34, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Do you need help with the details of how to review A class articles?
- Some advice though, if you like how military history does it, pop a detailed query onto their project talk page, I'm sure someone there would be glad to assist another wikiproject, and from old memory that project is very active, so help from them should come fast. —— nixeagle 12:44, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
My Wikipedia page is left justified how do i change it?
how do i change the Wikipedia page to be in the middle like a normal internet page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.85.163.59 (talk) 02:02, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean. Wikipedia and most other websites usually have left-justified text. Is it about the screen placement of the window you watch Wikipedia in? If so then you may be able to "drag" the window with the mouse at the top or right edge of the window, but it depends on your software. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Superscript
Is there a way to do "th" as in "1/5th" so that the "th" shows up in superscript? Without using superscipt, that is, a character code or HMTL or something. Does that make any sense at all? Maury (talk) 02:47, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I understand what you're saying. Many word processors will automatically change the "th" into a superscript. August 5th would be August 5th for example. I'm not sure the MediaWiki software does it automatically. You may have to use tags. Others may know more though. I hope this helps! TN‑X-Man 03:01, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- You must use the superscript tag. A shortcut to do so is on the toolbar, the button, which produces . Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:09, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Note that Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Typography says:
- The ordinal suffix (e.g., th) is not superscripted (23rd and 496th, not 23rd and 496th).
Experienced user can't figure out why his text has vanished
Hello - I had a snarky lolcat on my user page, and I decided, for layout reasons, to move it into my userboxen box (see this edit). When I did so, however, the non-wikilinked text in the caption turned white, and I can't figure out why this is or how to fix it. Because I'm an idiot with wikimarkup. Can somebody help? Sarcasticidealist (talk) 07:03, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- It is because in the template {{Userboxtop}}, you defined the
textcolor =
parameter with#ffffff
(white). I have fixed it by surrounding the text in<font></font>
tags and defining the color of the words as black (see [8]). Hope that it was you wanted! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk ♦ contribs) @ 07:13, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Question on a blacklisted domain
While conducting a search for our school Gonzaga University, we noticed that our online website http://www.gonzaga online.com had been blacklisted for being a spammer. Not sure why this is. How can we get this removed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.210.143.158 (talk) 13:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Give me a moment to respond, others out there, please wait a few moments. I'm doing some lookups to find out why this is the case, and I'll be back with you :) —— nixeagle 14:04, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I finally found out why this was added. Someone was apparently spamming user pages, and thus this link was added to the english wikipedia blacklist. You can find out full details at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2008_Archive_Mar_2#User_page_spammer. If you want to talk to the person that did the addition of the link, talk to User talk:Hu12. —— nixeagle 14:14, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think he means Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2008_Archive_May_1#User_page_spammer2. And apparently Hu12 has been on WikiBreak since July 1. —teb728 t c 21:11, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Blacklisted domain name
Hello, for some reason our website ogpaper.com has been blacklisted. Please, advise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 15:24, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- (quick note, not an answer) That website is primarily an online gambling site peppered with a little news about casinos and the like. Mjpresson (talk) 15:43, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
(response) Of course it's a gambling website, the name of the website says it. I didn't think this is of any importance at all. Also, the website is primarily for gambling news, peppered with ads (just like any website).
- What is your question? − Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 16:46, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Why is our website blacklisted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 16:46, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- What do you mean by blacklisted? I don't see a problem with http://ogpaper.com. Are you unable to save the link here on the English Wikipedia? If the problem is just that you must answer a CAPTCHA then that is normal for unregistered users adding external links. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:50, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
It said: "The following link has triggered our spam protection filter: ogpaper.com" with the "http://www." included (just tried to type in the full domain and it gave me the same response). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 16:55, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
\.ogpaper\.com
is on the blacklist at meta. Algebraist 17:03, 1 August 2008 (UTC)- So the answer to your question of why your site is blacklisted is that a link to it would serve no encyclopedic purpose. Unlike your site Wikipedia does not contain links for advertising. —teb728 t c 18:51, 1 August 2008 (UTC) More specifically, the request that added your site to the blacklist is here. —teb728 t c 19:02, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
TEB728 - I was not aware that Wiki blacklists automatically websites which you think have no encyclopedic purpose. We have broken quite a few stories and I was actually going to edit the entry "Bodog" to add the response of the CEO to the latest money bust. But I am not going to argue with you, since you are clearly biased towards gambling websites or something.
A question to the rest of the Users: I know we have not added the entries we've got blacklisted for. What can I do to remove the ban? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 20:41, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- "Wiki blacklists automatically websites": no, editors report spam, the issue is investigated and the site added to the blacklist. The site was blacklisted in November 2007, see Spam_blacklist/LogPre2008 You can see the request was here. You can request removal from the blacklist at MediaWiki_talk:Spam-blacklist#Proposed_removals. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:54, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the help. One of the senior editors should explain this to teb728, according to him/her "the answer to your question of why your site is blacklisted is that a link to it would serve no encyclopedic purpose". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 22:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suspect the Bodog response you refer to is /news/news-02290.html on your site. This is essentially a press release issued by one of your advertisers. Even if your site were not blacklisted, a link to this page would be deleted as WP:SPAM. —teb728 t c 07:47, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually this is what I was trying to post (I doubt that editor who specializes in Gambling would have deleted it):
[i]On July 31st, 2008, court filings in Maryland say that in January and February a total of $14.2 million was seized from accounts in the name of JBL Services and Transaction Solutions at Wachovia, Regions Bank, Bank of America and Sun Trust Bank. In July, filings say, another $9.9 million was found in eight accounts at Nevada State Bank, a unit of Zion Bancorporation (nasdaq: ZION - news - people ), in the name of Zaftig Instantly Processed Payments, doing business as ZipPayments.com. The companies are described as helping to facilitate parts of the Bodog operation.[1] The CEO of Morris Mohawk Gaming Group Alwyn Morris later said in a statement that second case refers to a payment processor known as Zippayments.com and seizure of funds from this processor’s bank accounts in Nevada. The article falsely implies – but notably does not go so far as to state - that $9.9M seized from Zippayment’s Nevada bank accounts were funds on account for “Bodog”. [2][/i]
I personally believe that someone interested in Bodog would like to know all this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.8.24.140 (talk) 13:00, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
logs are missing?
Why are there no logs for the "Optic" page? The first step to find out why a page has changed is to check the log, right? but when I request them, it says no logs found. why not? Tericl2 (talk) 15:45, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- There is one log entry (the page was moved by a vandal), but you probably want the page history. Algebraist 15:48, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Well, there's logs for a page that indicate if the page has previously been deleted, moved, or protected. There's also a history that shows all the edits that have been made to a page. To which one were you referring? TN‑X-Man 15:50, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Optic redirects to Optics. You can get to the page history [9] of Optic by first clicking Optic, then clicking "Redirected from Optic" at the top, and finally clicking "history". This shows the page has been edited by a user name very similar to yours. Page deleton leaves a log entry, but turning a page into a redirect does not. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:36, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Definition list formatting issue
I am trying to do some cleanup for WP:WikiProject New Jersey and am getting frustrated by the indentations on Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Jersey/templates. The definition lists using the semi-colon seem to be continually indenting and a newline is not reverting the indent back, causing the bottom of the page to only display on the right hand third or so. Audio file question
To be able to test my new microphone, I plugged it into my father's computer instead of my own (to see if the microphone itself is at fault, not my soundcard or its drivers). I opened up Microsoft Sound Recorder (yes, my father uses Windows Vista) and recorded myself saying "Haloo!" in Finnish. Unfortunately, my father doesn't have speakers, so I was unable to play the sound back. I emailed it to myself and played it back on my own Fedora 9 system. I heard nothing whatsoever. But I am still unsure whether this is because the file itself does not contain any sound, or because Fedora 9 can not play WMA files. Is it possible to upload the file to Wikipedia so you others can test it for me? JIP | Talk 21:21, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- To answer your first question: yeah, only Windows can play WMA audio, and you can't record using Sound Recorder in any other format :( 2.)Special:Upload doesn't say you can upload .wma files, so I suppose you can't. Tip: If you play the file on your father's computer using Windows Media Player, you can usually tell if it's empty or not by using one of the "visualizations" (right-clicking on the display where video would be playing if it were a video). Inquiry from the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program
To Whom it May Concern:
A fan of our program recently brought to our attention that the information about us posted on Wikipedia under the categories Mural Arts Program, Jane Golden, and Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network is both inaccurate and out-of-date.
Today, I attempted to update those listings on behalf of the organization; however, my efforts were not successful. I am writing both to let you know that I was (and am) acting as an official representative of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and to ask how this can be resolved.
Kindly let me know. Thank you.
Sincerely,

- I reverted two of the aforementioned contributions, because they were, as explained in my edit summaries, cut and pasted directly from web sites and printed materials. Copyright issues aside, the text was of press release quality and not suitable for encyclopedic content. However, there was clearly information relevant to the subjects, and one hopes that another effort will be made to add content in an acceptable form. JNW (talk) 21:41, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Backlink on user subpages
Hi everyone. I'm using a transcluded menu in my user space, and I am wondering if there is any way to suppress the the "< User:SJL" backlink that appears in the top left corner of my subpages. It shifts my menu down the page, and isn't necessary on pages that have the menu. Thanks for your help! – SJL 23:37, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Add the following to Special:Mypage/monobook.css (assuming you use the default monobook skin)
#contentSub {
display: none
}
- Note that it'll always suppress the backlink. And if it shifts everything too far up, just ask me and I might be able to fix it. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, this:
span.subpages {
display: none;
}
#contentSub {
margin-bottom: 5px;
}
- works better. If you only want the backlink suppressed on your subpages, I'll have to figure out how to write a JavaScript script to do that... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 02:19, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I tried both, and only the first worked for me. If you do decide to write a script that limits it to just the user's own pages, please let me know. Also, any ideas on how to do something like this so that other people who view my pages will get the same formatting? – SJL 02:40, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- That's not possible, as well-written CSS and JavaScript can be used to hijack people's computers (plant malware, etc.); compromise accounts, all sort of bad stuff. That's why CSS stylesheets only work if they are in Mediawiki:Common.css or Mediawiki:monobook.css(for monobook-only), etc. or your own /monobook.css. Seeing that the backlink is there for a reason, I don't think they'd let you put the code into the site-wide stylesheet, so you're stuck with it only working for you :( (PS - I'm working on a script that only works in your userpage + subpages) Calvin 1998 (t-c) 02:56, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. I had been hoping that there was a particular code that I could add to individual pages where I did not want the link, but I guess that doesn't exist. Let me know how the script works out. – SJL 16:45, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Missing article
A week ago I created an article (to the best of my understanding of the instructions)on the British actor Robin Hunter - son of the well-known film actor Ian Hunter, himself active in films, TV and theatre. The style of it was based on comparable articles on similar subjects. All I know how to do, to put the article online, is to Save the Page. It has not gone on the web, nor can I find any answer to an earlier question about it. Am I missing - or misunderstanding - something?
Many thanks - Roger Sansom —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.16.224.196 (talk) 23:59, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Roger. If I understand you correctly, you're having trouble finding the article you created. When I typed Robin Hunter into the search box, though, it came up without any trouble. If you click on the name, it will take you to the page. Does that answer your question? – SJL 00:19, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Maybe last time you tried to search for it, you may have made a typo? Well, either way, the article is still here as stated above. Just click Robin Hunter. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 01:52, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the above responses. Yes, I can find what I wrote, on Wikipedia (someone has already edited it further, which is fine). What I don't understand - it may be that I have not grasped the basics - is how this relates to the article, hopefully, appearing publicly on the net? Can someone please clarify. Thanks. Roger —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.16.224.196 (talk) 13:52, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Articles and changes appear on the net as soon as they are saved. This article is accessible to the world at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hunter. If your problem is that Google or another search engine does not find the article, then it is just because their web crawlers haven't indexed it yet. Google will probably do it within a couple of weeks. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:06, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Special page
Is there, by any chance, a special page (or feature, etc.) that would allow one to find pages that are available in a certain group of languages? For instance, if I were looking for an article written in German, spanish, French, and Welsh? I wouldn't expect there to be, but I'd find it quite helpful if there was. Thanks, —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 03:24, 2 August 2008 (UTC).
- A special page on, say, the English Wikipedia wouldn't actually know what articles exist on other language Wikipedias. On the English Wikipedia itself, I'm pretty sure one would only be able to search for interlanguage links. Since editors have to manually add such links to articles, there is no guarantee of a one-to-one correspondence between interlanguage links and articles on other language Wikipedias. (There could be articles out there, but no links yet from the English Wikipedia; or there could be broken links on the English Wikipedia, unless someone or something is checking for interlanguage link rot.) You might be able to search for interlanguage links by using one of the methods under WP:EIW#Query. Also see WP:EIW#Translate. If you would tell us why you want to do this type of search, someone might know another way to reach your underlying goal. --Teratornis (talk) 05:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

How to Merge a New Talk Page with an Old Talk Page
Hi. How do you merge a new article talk page with an old article talk page which has a different title? For example, I want to merge Talk:Indo-Canadians with the old Talk:Canadians of Indian descent. Sonic99 (talk) 04:22, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've never actually done this, but see the instructions in Help:Merging and moving pages. --Teratornis (talk) 04:54, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with two talk pages originates from a cut-and-paste move in March 2007.[10][11] I have posted a request to fix it at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:28, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've merged histories of the two articles. The talk page histories can't be merged though, because there wasn't a cut&page move in the past, and there have been new changes to Talk:Indo-Canadians. I moved the old talk to an archive of the new talk page, so it's currently at Talk:Indo-Canadians/Archive 1. I hope this helps. --PeaceNT (talk) 14:00, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. That looks like a reasonable solution. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:39, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Is Sexual Assault Complainant Name Unpublished Personal Information?
Is the name of a sexual assault complainant, who hasn't given permission for their name to be published, considered "unpublished personal information" in the sense used on the page about requesting oversight? It seems pretty similar to linking a name and a pseudonym, an example of "unpublished personal information" given on that page.

how do i suggest the correct location of a marker? the marker in question is in merrion square in dublin & the subject is "botanic gardens" which is on the north side of dublin, maybe 5 kilometres away. thanks. Patrick2808 (talk) 06:38, 2 August 2008 (UTC).

Clearing of block log
I've been blocked a bunch of times when I was an experienced user, for breaking the three revert rule by reverting POV at the Egyptians, Middle East, and Negroid page. Now the users I was edit warring with have turned out to be tag-teaming sock puppets, so I was thinking that my blocks there might not have been justified, in hindsight. Could they maybe be removed from the log?
The users I edit warred with were User: Zerida and several of his sock puppets, and User: Muntuwandi. FunkMonk (talk) 12:16, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Block logs cannot be removed. In some cases a blocking admin will make a comment in the block log explaining that a former block was not justified. I have not examined the reverts but it doesn't sound like anything at Wikipedia:Three-revert rule#Exceptions permits your reverts. If the edits were by a banned user and you knew that then reverting multiple times would be OK, but not in the situation you describe. See Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets for other options. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, I meant other options next time you are in a dispute, not options to deal with your old block log. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:40, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm, can't I get something else instead? Like a personal thumbs up from Jimbo Wales or similar? The reason why I violated the three revert rule so many times in my early days was (other than that I thought the previous edit was POV, of course) that I thought reverting simply meant pushing the undo button (English is not my first language). I have since discovered that it isn't the case, and haven't been banned for it since and probably won't in the future. FunkMonk (talk) 12:44, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Without commenting on the specifics of your case, a block for edit warring with editors who do not appear to be sockpuppets at the time is quite legitimate. Even Jimbo has a block log - you should just be prepared to explain it if there is ever a need to, and try and keep it clean henceforth. If you do nothing blockable it is unlikely to be looked at again. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:48, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the answers. It was worth a try! FunkMonk (talk) 12:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose the ultimate "thumbs up" would be applying and succeeding at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship, but some applicants leave there with bruises instead. I don't know your editing record but many editors with old blocks have passed - usually not because the blocks were wrong but because they have showed they know better now. Problems with Images uploaded to commons.wikipedia by other users than the original poster
Another user re-uploaded an image which I had originally uploaded to en.wikipedia to commons.wikipedia causing my original upload to be nominated for deletion. After I confronted the other user with his action and asked him to delete his re-uploading of my photo to commons.wikipedia, the user refused to do so stating that it is within his rights to do it due to the GNU licensing which I have attached to my photo. Although the other user is formally correct, his action still does delete my original upload and consequently it will also delete the photo in the wikipedia pages in which it occurs (the other user also did not re-link the photo in these pages). It seems to me that re-uploading other people's images to commons.wikipedia without prior notice to the original poster nor giving the original poster a chance to move images to commons.wikipedia themselves, goes against common courtesy. Concerning this matter I have searched wikipedia for any guidelines but have not found any. Takeaway 15.16, August 2, 2008 (UTC)
- When the WP software loads an image, it looks locally, then in Commons. So— if the local copy is deleted, it will automatically pull it from commons. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 15:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

- On Wikipedia, there is no common sense, so there is probably no common courtesy, either. We do have WP:CIVIL and WP:CONSENSUS, but we also have WP:BOLD which essentially goes against asking for permission before doing stuff. (On Wikipedia, we have guidelines which can seem to be both for and against a bunch of things, reminding us of Albert Bartlett's quip about experts and their disagreements: for every Ph.D., there is an equal and opposite Ph.D.) Obviously, the less a person understands about Wikipedia, the less courteous their boldness may tend to be. One must cultivate plenty of sangfroid to survive on Wikipedia, where we do find plenty of users who make up in boldness what they lack in knowledge of Wikipedia's rules. --Teratornis (talk) 16:51, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

- In the first place, the Commons image has been deleted at Anan’s request; so the immediate problem is solved.
- But I do not understand your objection. Was the copy Anan upload a modified version of your image? If he did modify it, you could have requested that your version be retained on Wikipedia: Duplicate Images with more than one creator are not deleted if the differences of the versions are significant. If he did not modify it, I do not see what the problem was. Perhaps you think it would require relinking the image, but that is not correct. If your copy had been deleted, Wikipedia would have seamlessly linked to the Commons copy: no one would have noticed the difference. Or perhaps you wanted your name on the Commons copy?
- Inasmuch as you have licensed the image under free license, why didn’t you (and why don’t you) upload it to Commons yourself? —teb728 t c 03:29, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- I am a fairly new contributor to wikipedia and when I saw that one of the pictures which I had uploaded was suddenly up for deletion due to someone else re-uploading it (unmodified) to commons.wikipedia for no apparent reason, I became alarmed thinking that I needed to re-link etcetera (which I know now not to be the case). I therefore requested the other person to remove the re-uploaded photo. Unfortunately, the other person immediately took offence to my request and treated my request in a highly sarcastic way stating that they were allowed to do what they pleased with the image due to the licensing I had attached to it and that I couldn't do anything about it. If only the other person had understood my alarm of having a picture deleted instead of becoming sarcastic and fencing with rules and regulations, this whole entry in the Help Desk wouldn't have been necessary. I would also have gladly moved all my pictures (and not just the one) myself to Commons had that other person requested it of me and had told me of the benefits to the WP community.
- I am glad to see that the "Upload File" page has been modified since my last upload to expound the benefits of uploading files to Commons instead of to en.wikipedia. Takeaway 10.25, August 3, 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia Access from China
In mid-September, I will return to China to teach English at a university in Nanjing. For the past two years I have not been able to access Wikipedia from China because of the Chinese's censorship of the Internet. However, I understand there is a way of using a "proxy server" to get around/through the Chinese blocking. Can someone tell me how to use a proxy server to gain access to Wikipedia while in China? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.162.151.156 (talk) 15:36, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- See Blocking of Wikipedia in mainland China. Proxies will let you see Wikipedia, but you won't be able to edit by your IP. Whether you can go on as a registered name or not will depend on which proxy you use. Googling "proxy" seems to come up with decent results. Paragon12321 (talk) 15:45, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Everyone approaches Wikipedia with at least a few preconceived ideas about how it should work, but Wikipedia is very different than anything most people have experienced before. Thus a smart way to approach Wikipedia is to empty one's mind of preconceptions, to the extent possible, and read the friendly manuals to see how Wikipedia actually works. Lorcaserin
Article: Lorcaserin
There is an editorial bias against Lorcaserin, and a general misrepresentation of the facts.
The article begins:
According to their published statements, Arena "believes" that lorcaserin is a selective hypothalamus 5-HT2C receptor agonist, and they "believe" that activation of this receptor promotes weight loss through appetite suppression. However, the science remains imprecise.
The use of the quotational "believes" indicates a lack of evidence. There is a great deal of evidence for the receptor selectivity. The proposed mode of action is well documented and well accepted in peer-reviewed literature. Further, as the article later acknowledges, weight-loss is demonstrated. This acknowledgment of the facts is followed by the statement: "Arena admits that upon discontinuation of lorcaserin treatment, all lost weight is regained." This is phrased in a way as to make the obvious, seem to be a cleverly exposed secret. Non-permanent changes are almost always non-permanent.
The article continues:
"Arena is taking care to demonstrate -- and announce to investors and consumers -- that lorcaserin does not cause heart valve damage as fenfluramine, a presumed 5-HT2B agonist, did. Arena stated that the Phase 2 clinical trials show that Lorcaserin "has no effect on heart valve regurgitation at 12 weeks", and yet their data shows possible adverse effects on the aortic valve:"
There is no doubting the fact that fenfluoramine caused a nearly 30% incidence of valvulopathies. The data shown does not support the conclusion that there is an increase in aortic valve issues. As a matter of fact, the chosen dosage for Lorcaserin, 10 mg, shows a reduction in this data set extraction. It would be dangerous to draw conclusions of safety from dosages beyond the recommended. Adverse effects from overdoses are common.
The final paragraph addresses the complete safety clearance for Lorcaserin by stating the data "did not meet the trial-stopping criteria developed by an independent Echocardiographic Data Safety Monitoring Board (EDSMB), and so the trial continues."
The paragraph continues:
"Although BLOSSOM participants will receive 18- and 24-month follow-up echocardiograms, these results will not be reviewed by an EDSMB. Two other Phase 3 trials ("BLOSSOM", and "BLOOM-DM") provide echocardiograms but they will not be reviewed by an EDSMB. BLOOM participants were pre-screened to exclude valvulopathy, but BLOSSOM and BLOOM-DM participants were not."
I find the persistent dwelling on the fact that the data no longer needs an external review, to be offensive. These studies approved and the data will be submitted to the FDA as part of a drug application. These well designed studies will thoroughly measure the heart effects of Lorcaserin, and the analysis of the data will be comprehensive and objective. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.208.216.169 (talk) 18:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

- On the Help desk, we don't normally edit other people's questions, but I added some blockquote tags to the paragraphs you quoted, so the question will format according to your likely intent. I also added a section heading to the question, and I changed Lorcaserin from an external link to a wikilink.
- On Wikipedia, we try to avoid writing things such as "I find the ... to be offensive." See: WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF. The proper frame of mind for editing on Wikipedia is sangfroid. In our writing, we try to focus on the objective facts (although we may shout and curse at our computers now and then); writing about our emotional states rarely gets us to consensus any sooner. The harsh reality is that distant strangers tend to ascribe lower importance to our emotions than we do.

- You may wish to create an account if you want to participate in a content dispute. Other participants may relate somewhat better to a person who writes from a consistent username. (Unregistered users may get something of a bad rap on Wikipedia because the vast majority of vandals do not create accounts. So to maximize your chances of being taken seriously, you could create an account. I'm not saying that's how things should work, but that's how it seems a lot of people's emotional brains keep score.)
- In general, in disputes on Wikipedia, the side with the best understanding of Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and procedures usually wins. Wikipedia has very extensive rules that have resulted from past disputes; most current disputes arise because one side or the other doesn't know everything about Wikipedia yet. Thus your odds of influencing the Lorcaserin article and having your changes "stick" are proportional to how much time you invest in studying how Wikipedia works.

- Since Wikipedia does not require users to disclose their ages, what matters most would be a young editor's apparent age (or mental age). At the other end of the age scale, Wikipedia might tend to discriminate unintentionally against older people by being so radically different than anything many people have experienced before. I'd suspect a lower percentage of old people than young people would feel comfortable with Wikipedia's paradigm shift. Just as we see a lot more teenagers texting each other than elderly people. When people get to a certain age, they tend to lose interest in newfangled contraptions. --Teratornis (talk) 21:07, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Are these albums notable?
Back in the 70's there was a series of albums called Top of the Pops. They consisting of covers of the biggest hits of the day, and actually outsold many of the original singles, and 2 actually hit No.1 on the UK albums charts. Hey I don't see any edit, how was it fixed. --Leladax (talk) 09:02, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

- oh, I imagined something like that, I just didn't expect it to be true: every page with that template having a problem. --Leladax (talk) 10:26, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Logos
Is it possible to upload a few logos from German schools on the English Wikipedia? All these schools have got an article here. These logos: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. If it is possible to upload, which license I have to choose? Maybe “Non-free / fair use” → “Logo”? (By the way: I have asked the question already on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions but I did not got an answer.) — PsY.cHo, 08:39, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Templates - compare character strings?
I've just written {{UK charity}} and {{Scottish charity}}, which take as input a charity's registration number and produce a useful external link to their records on the appropriate regulatory site. I'd like to make them into a single template. To do this I need to check whether the first 2 characters of the registration number, parameter 1, are "SC". I've rummaged around the help files and can find ways to do arithmetical comparisons, but not a string comparison. Is there a way to do this, so that I can have a formula like
- {{#ifeq [the first 2 characters of the parameter] |SC| [the current scottish template] | [the current England and Wales template]}}
Any ideas? PamD (talk) 08:52, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
What happened to the Emperor of Mankind page?
Why was the page for the Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40,000 deleted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.16.170.55 (talk) 09:16, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

External Namespace question
Trying to get to The Golem: It!, to check the status of a fair use image, I typed "Golem: It!" into the search bar, and was directed to a "Gruppo Operativo Linux Empoli" wiki. Is this really what should happen? Is there a list of all namespaces that get redirected externally? Thanks --Storkk (talk) 09:23, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
