Guillermo Pérez born October 14, 1979 in Uruapan, Michoacán is a gold medal-winning Mexican taekwondo practitioner. Pérez stands at 5'7 (171 cm.) and weighs 128 lbs. (58 kg). [1][2]

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Pérez won the gold medal in the -58kg category[3]. Pérez defeated Dominican Yulis Gabriel Mercedes Aug. 20, 2008. The match ended 1-1 after four rounds, but Pérez was deemed superior by unanimous decision. [4][5]

This marked only the third gold medal for Mexico since the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the 11th gold medal ever for the Mexicans, and the country's 53rd overall Olympic medal. [6]

Before his gold, Pérez had won the silver medal in flyweight (-58kg) at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championships. [7]

Early years

Guillermo Pérez started to practice taekwondo at the age of five years old. Even with the defeats on his early years, he kept practicing and at the age of ten won his first state tournament. Such success was the gate to compete at national competitions, and on his first nationals he got a bronze medal. On 1999 he achieved the national infant competition first place. On 1995 he traveled to Ottawa to assist to his first international competition, getting a second place. Later on 1996 he got the open american taekwondo first place, where more than 60 countries participated.

National Selection

On 1999 he moved to Puebla to get training from the olimpic champion William de Jesús, which transferred him his experience and get into the national selection, in where he tried to get without success on the past. He was part of the mexican taekwondo selection that traveled to the Panamerican Games of 1999 on Winnipeg, Canada.

On april 2004 he traveled to Madrid to play on the 2005 World Taekwondo championship , getting the ninth place. Three years later on 2007 he won the second place on the Holland open which opened him the opportunity to assist to the 2007 taekwondo world championship celebrated in Pekin where he achieve to get the second place against the spanish Juan Antonio Ramos.
