Crash

Initial reports stated that the aircraft, which was carrying 164 passengers and 9 crew members, caught fire in its left engine and crashed after being unable to gain altitude, then broke up into at least two parts and was swallowed by a violent fire.[3] El Pais reported that the plane had attempted to take off but aborted, had some maintenance performed during an hour and took off again[4]. Weather conditions in Madrid were fine at the time of the incident.[5]

The flight was also a codeshare operated on behalf of Lufthansa as LH 2554[6].

Response

In the process Barajas airport was shut down and under emergency procedures, now it's again open with restrictions (20 flights/hour instead of the usual 80 flights/hour). 11 fire brigade trucks and 45 ambulances arrived at the scene moments after the crash.
