An example of an Orphenoch, the Horse Orphenoch in Centaur-like form.

An Orphenoch (オルフェノク, Orufenoku) is a fictional human evolutionary stage seen in the 2003 Japanese television series Kamen Rider 555. Orphenochs are supposed to be the next stage in human evolution. They are stronger, tougher, and faster, with various other special abilities. The term Orphenoch is the combination of the names of a Greek mythological character, Orpheus, and a biblical character Enoch.

Types

There are three types of Orphenoch in the series:

  • Original Orphenochs: When a certain human suffers a violent death, he or she 'resurrects' into an Orphenoch.
  • Sired Orphenochs: When certain humans survive being attacked by an Orphenoch, they become Orephenochs themselves. They are weaker than other kinds of Orphenochs.
  • Evolved Orphenochs: The first of this type is the Orphenoch King, genetically perfect and unable to resume human form. An Orphenoch King can remove the genetic flaw from other Orphenochs, evolving them as well at the cost of their humanity.

Abilities

File:Crane Orphenoch.jpg
Crane Orphenoch's alternative form with wings.

All Orphenochs have the following abilities:

  • Enhanced Sense: One of the Orphenoch’s senses has been enhanced to a superhuman level. They may be able to hear, smell or see great distances, tuning out background noise to focus on their target.
  • Regeneration: This is the power that resurrects the Orphenoch after its first death. It is stronger in some Orphenochs than in others.
  • Transformation: Any non-evolved Orphenoch may transform between their human form and their Orphenoch form. Their Orphenoch form is a white or gray humanoid with characteristics of either a plant or an animal. This ability also lets them transform using Rider Gears.
  • Armor (Orphenoch form only): All Orphenoch are armored, such that they are immune to standard small arms fire. The strength of the armor varies wildly from Orphenoch to Orphenoch, and is a good measure of an Orphenoch's power. More powerful conventional weaponry can harm or even kill some Orphenochs, while others can withstand even the basic attacks of the Rider Gears (though most are destroyed by them.) In the movie, Paradise Lost all Orphenochs were portrayed as being invulnerable to normal bullets (and special bullets designed to fight them were a failure.)
  • Siring: All Orphenochs are capable of making or 'siring' other Orphenochs (similar to Vampires or Werewolves) by attacking humans and (usually) stabbing them through the heart. This has a very low success rate, and usually results in disintegrating the human in question. Some Orphenochs (most prevalent in Paradise Lost) seem to be capable of using long, skin piercing tentacles specifically for siring others, and one Orphenoch (Leo, possessor of the Psyga Gear never seen in Orphenoch form) does so (forming a tentacle from one of his index fingers) in human form. However, all other examples are in Orphenoch form.

Some Orphenochs have more abilities. It is unclear whether these abilities are unique to certain Orphenochs, or simply a matter of skill (it is definitely implied that abilities like Energy Blasts can be learned by all Orphenochs, but not shown.) These secondary abilities include:

  • Energy Blast: Orphenochs may fire energy blasts from their hands in either form. The attack is slow, and inaccurate over long distances, so it is often used as a surprise attack.
  • Reanimation: One Orphenoch has been seen to be capable of regenerating his entire body after being disintegrated, although he was only capable of doing so a limited number of times. How he gained this ability (or knew of it, and its limited supply) is unknown. It is also unknown whether any other Orphenochs could develop the same power. It may be linked the Regeneration ability that lets natural Orphenochs revive after their death as a human.
  • Weapon Generation (Orphenoch form only): Some Orphenochs can generate some kind of weapon from their body. The weapon varies from Orphenoch to Orphenoch, but it is generally some kind of melee weapon, though guns are also possible. After battle they disappear like the armour, presumably absorbed into the Orphenoch's body. These weapons can be destroyed and later regenerated. On one occasion a weapon is taken from an Orphenoch who is thought to be dead, and remains solid for some time. It is unknown whether it later disintegrated, although the same Orphenoch was capable of generating the weapon next time he went into battle.
  • Hybrid Form (or Beast Form) (Orphenoch form only): Whilst in Orphenoch form, some Orphenochs may transform further into a hybrid between their Orphenoch and their plant/animal template. For example: Horse Orphenoch could transform into a Centaur like creature, Crane Orphenoch can grow wings, Rose Orpheonoch could transform into a shower of rose petals, and Elephant Orphenoch can take on the form of a huge elephant and utilize its animal traits.
  • Secondary Form (or Demon Form) (Orphenoch form only): Some Orphenochs have exhibited a second orphenoch form in addition to their first; giving a greater boost in power. Most notable is the Dragon Orphenoch, Kitazaki, could shift between an extremely bulky and powerful form to a thin and agile form; the Horse Orphenoch (Kiba Yuji) also had a second form used towards the end of the series, and exclusively in Paradise Lost. It's stronger than the Hybrid Beast Form, but causes the Orphenoch to go berserk as the Orphenoch side dominates the human side.

Lifespan

It is uncertain when or how Orphenoch dies of natural causes due to the infinite lifespan, but are almost invulnerable to just about untimely demise ranging from various injuries that would be fatal to humans. In addition, their wounds recover quickly; Orphenochs can be seen injured when a small blue flame bursts from their wound. Unfortunately, it seems that they can only be destroyed at the hands of a Rider or another Orphenoch; possibly because they're powerful enough to kill them.

It is only known to a few Orphenochs that their bodies will inevitably break down and disintegrate, as if they were killed, within a few years of becoming an Orphenoch (the time seems to vary depending on the Orphenoch, perhaps because of reasons outlined below.)

Former chief of Smart Brain, Hinagata, leared of this prior to the series, explanating was that "the human body cannot stand such a rapid evolution", and that as such, they were doomed to die. The exact meaning of "rapid evolution" is vague, but based on other signs, it would appear to mean their transformation into and out of Orphenoch form (as well as using Rider Gears to transform.) This is also a problem for those using the Kaixa Gear via Orphenoch DNA, who will disintegrate like Orphenochs after transforming too much.

However, abstaining from transforming does not seem to solve the problem, as Hinagata disintegrated during a conversation with Kusaka Masato, without having transformed for some time. It is possible that each transformation can be equated to an amount of time that is taken off that person's lifespan. Others, however, have exhibited signs of early disintegration (the process starts with the skin turning grey, and slightly ash-like, before their entire body is destroyed) but subsequently showed a recovery.

The only known solution to this problem is the Orphenoch King, who can "complete" Orphenochs' evolution, apparently forcing them to remain in Orphenoch form, but granting long life and a higher level of power.

In Paradise Lost, although the Orphenoch King is not seen or mentioned, Orphenochs do not seem to suffer a limited lifespan any more.

Orphenoch List

Orphenoch King

The Orphenoch King is a special type who possesses the power to "complete" Orphenochs' evolution, removing all traces of humanity in the process while granting long life. Unlike others, the Orphenoch King can disintergrate them instantly. The Rider Gears were originally created to protect the Orphenoch King.

  • Teruo Suzuki / Arch Orphenoch (Grasshopper) (鈴木 照男 / アークオルフェノク, Suzuki Teruo / Āku Orufenoku): (32-50): An anti-social young boy who was orphaned when his parents died in a fire caused by the Barnacle Orphenoch. Teruo was placed in the Sousai Children's Home (創才児童園, Sōsai Jidōen) orphanage run by Smart Brain until Kaido took him to his home and later stayed and lived in Keitarō's laundry mat. By episode 45, Teruo began to act strangely and was eventually revealed to be the Orphenoch King in Episode 47. Whenever Teruo blacks out, the Orphenoch persona emerging from his shadow to consume the lifeforce of Orphenochs to fully mature. After being taken by Kiba in episode 50, Teruo eventually transformed completely into the Arch Orphanoch. Fully awaken, the Arch Orphenoch fully evolved Saeko after beating Faiz. It took Yuji's sacrifice and Faiz Blaster Form's Blaster Crimson Smash to defeat the Arch Orphenoch. But Arch Orphenoch barely survived and was mortally wounded, placed in the stasis tank under Smart Brain by Saeko.[1]

Renegades

Renegades are Orphenochs that not aligned with Smart Brain, and each follows their own agenda. Most Renegades wish to continue with their normal human lives, thus they are branded as traitors that deserve death. Some use their new found powers to kill people who have wronged them (in real or imaginary ways), while others fight to protect humans.

  • Yūji Kiba / Horse Orphenoch (木場 勇治 / ホースオルフェノク, Kiba Yūji / Hōsu Orufenoku): A young man who becomes a 'natural' Orphenoch after dying as a result of a car-crash, although he lived in a comatose state for two years. Upon reviving, and finds his life in ruins. He kills his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in rage. He quickly comes to deplore Smart Brain's tactics and resolves to become an Orphenoch who will protect humans and fight Smart Brain. After he believed Yuka to have been killed by the police, he turns against his ideals and eventually replaces Murakami as the chairman of Smart Brain. After acquiring the Kaixa Gear, Kiba eventually fought Takumi, who revived his faith in humanity. In the end, Kiba was mortally wounded by the Arch Orphenoch, grabbing the monster to allow Faiz to kill them both, though only the Arch Orphenoch survived. In the Paradise Lost ending, Kiba was deceived into using the Orga Gear to fight Faiz, but aided him and died from injuries sustained by the Elasmotherium Orphenoch. *SPECIAL NOTE- the movie PL version of Horse Orphenoch's design is dramatically different than that of the TV series. It now sports a more helmet like head design as the horse snout is pushed upward to allow a more insect/human-like face. The singular horn's enlarged and moved toward the top of its head while its white mane extends much fuller all the way down to the base of its neck/back. Gone is the hoof design on its chest and replaced by a larger and more powerful chest armor. During the last episode of the TV series, Horse Orphenoch evolved into the film version during his final battle with Faiz Blaster Form, but reverted back to his regular TV version prior to his demise.[2]
  • Yuka Osada / Crane Orphenoch (長田 結花 / クレインオルフェノク, Osada Yuka / Kurein Orufenoku) (4-44): A teenage girl who is bullied terribly by her younger sister (in a foster home?) and other girls in her school and basketball team. Yuka's foster parents favored her sister over her. After suffering extreme emotional stress she falls down snow covered stairs and revives as a 'natural' Orphenoch, slaughtering the entire basketball team and her sister. She meets Kiba, and agrees with his ideals of protecting humans, although occasionally (and unwillingly) kills humans who seem bad (bullies, etc.) without others knowing. She exchanged e-mails with Keitarou before (and to a lesser extent after) becoming an Orphenoch, and seemed to have a semi-romantic relationship. She later developed a strong crush on Kaidō, though he did not reciprocate. Eventually she and Keitarou come to realize who the other was, and they had a brief relationship before she was weakened by police's shots and killed by Saeko when Osada was unable to assume Orphenoch form. In the Paradise Lost ending, Yuka was impaled by the Elasmotherium Orphenoch. *SPECIAL NOTE- the movie PL version of Crane Orphenoch's design is also dramatically different than that of the TV series. The shape of the crane head design is now more pronounced and moved upward to reveal the lower (and sexier) portion of a female human face with a pair of full lips. Her winged collars are also extended and protruding upward in a flying pose. One more significant change is the addition of crane-like legs that appear in place of the original Orphenoch-humanoid legs during Crane Orphenoch's flight.[3]
  • Naoya Kaidō / Snake Orphenoch (海堂 直也 / スネークオルフェノク, Kaidō Naoya / Sunēku Orufenoku) (5-50): A young man turned into a 'sired' Orphenoch by Toda Eiichi the Squid Orphenoch to make an example to Kiba and Yuka of how Orphenochs must make allies. He is an overly eccentric person prone to incredibly fast speeches and constant mood swings. He played the guitar in his younger days, but sabotage from his teacher destroyed some of the motor-skills in his left hand, forcing him to abandon his music. He greatly mistreats Yuka accidentally due to her crush on him. Continuing struggling with his nature as an Orphenoch, Kaidō ends up living with Kiba and Yuka, although he is the least concerned about protecting humans. At times he sides with Smart Brain over Kiba and Yuka, but his powerful and soft-hearted conscience often stops him from committing heinous acts at the last second. He eventually develops a partnership with Keitarou, which results in many harebrained schemes to win the respected woman of their desire, and bonded with Teruo. He briefly wore one of the six Riot Trooper gears under Kiba's term in Smart Brain. Though he survived in the TV series, Kaidō was eaten alive by the Elasmotherium Orphenoch in the movie shortly after he bares his heart to the dying Yuka/Crane Orphenoch.[4]
  • Hanagata / Goat Orphenoch (花形 / ゴートオルフェノク, Hanagata / Gōto Orufenoku) (1-48): The foster father of the student of Ryuusei School and former chief of Smart Brain, Hanagata was intent to find the Orphenoch King. He is also responsible for creating the three Rider belts and the six Riot Trooper belts. The origin of his Orphenoch nature remains untold in the TV series, however it is safe to assume that he is perhaps a 'natural' Orphenoch due to his great speed and strength (that suppresses even the Dragon Orphenoch). He disappeared under Smart Brain HQ upon learning the fatal nature of humans' rapid evolution into Orphenochs. Before he died from his rapid evolution, Hanagata returned to Smart Brain to strip Murakami of his duties and appointed Kiba Yūji as the permanent head of the company to fulfill his final request: to terminate the Orphenoch King.[5]
  • Shigehisa Aoki / Dolphin Orphenoch (青木 茂久 / ドルフィンオルフェノク, Aoki Shigehisa / Dorufin Orufenoku) (20-21) - Survived, Takumi & Yuji's boss at a pizza parlor; was forced by Smart Brain to kill humans, he is defeated by Faiz, but spares him telling him to live as a human.[6]
  • Crab Orphenoch (クラブオルフェノク, Kurabu Orufenoku) (41-42): A experimental guinea pig used by human scientists until he heard Osada's scream and broke out of confinement to free Osada. He had no interest in fighting the humans who held him prisoner and limply ran for it after giving Osada to Kiba. Despite Faiz's interference to save him from Kaixa and Delta, the Crab suffered Breakdown and died.[7]

Smart Brain

A company that is a front for a group of Orphenochs that sees themselves as the master race and are dedicated to the genocide of the human race and increase of the Orphenoch population. They experiment in making their kind even more powerful and developing weapons that only Orphenochs can use. This is the largest coordinated group of Orphenochs ever seen, and in Paradise Lost they seem to have formed a de-facto world government after the Orphenoch revolution.

  • Kyōji Murakami / Rose Orphenoch (村上 峡児 / ローズオルフェノク, Murakami Kyōji / Rōzu Orufenoku) (9-47): The temp president of Smart Brain after Eiichi Toda's death. Murakami was the one who assigned Lucky Clover to do his dirty work until Hanagata took back the company and gave control to Yūji Kiba. Despite losing his place in Smart Brain, Murakami had a trump card in the Orphenoch King, whom he had waited for and learn of his human host. To that end, Murakami attempted to abduct Teruo, fighting the Riders on his own and barely escaped their attacks. In his weakened state, Murakami offers his life to Teruo to awaken the Arch Orphenoch so he can correct the Orphenochs' genetic instability. In the alternate conclusion shown in the movie, Murakami was somehow decapitated and his head is kept alive in a tank until it was smashed by Smart Lady under orders for his failure in the end. He never had the chance to turn into a 'Rose Head' Orphenoch.[8]
  • Smart Lady (スマート レディ, Sumāto Redī): Smart Brain's "mascot", she works closely under the company's chief and helps fledgling Orphenochs. She never exhibits Orphenoch powers in the series, and her species is left ambiguous despite her association with blue butterflies. She acts friendly and playful towards the many workers at Smart Brain, although she doesn't realize that no one enjoys her company.
  • Eiichi Toda / Squid Orphenoch (戸田 英一 / スクィッドオルフェノク, Toda Eiichi / Skwiddo Orufenoku) (5): The head of Smart Brain who originally was tracking the Faiz belt, Toda was reasigned by Smart Lady to educate to Yuji and Yuka the nature of Orphenochs. He was also the one who made Kaido into an Orphenoch before being destroyed by Faiz's Crimson Smash..[9]

Lucky Clover

An elite quartet of Orphenochs within Smart Brain who are "cream of the crop"; in other words, elite assassins, and answer to the Chief. Only two of the original four survived.

  • Kitazaki / Dragon Orphenoch (北崎 / オラゴンオルフェノク, Kitazaki / Doragon Orufenoku, 28-49): The most powerful and youngest of the Lucky Clover group, referring to himself as the "strongest lifeform", able to turn anything he touches into ash. This talent also made Kitazaki withdrawn from society and have a childish outlook on other's suffering as fun. He was the one who brutally murdered all members of the Ryūsei School. Upon making his presence known, Kitazaki used the Delta Belt until he tired of it and gave it to Sawada. Kitazaki had a flawless victory streak until he battled Takumi as Faiz and suffered his first lost, driving him even more insane. By 49, Kitazaki was intent on killing Teruo to prove his superiority, with Saeko and Takuma forced to fight him to protect the boy. In the end, a very weakened Kitazaki was killed by the Arch Orphenoch before the monster ripped his face off and ate it.[10]
  • Saeko Kageyama / Lobster Orphenoch (影山 冴子 / ロブスターオルフェノク, Kageyama Saeko / Robusutā Orufenoku, 11-50): The calmest of the group, she works as the proprietor of the Clover Bar. Her calling call to her victim is to send them a bottle of wine, as their final drink. She enjoys seeing others suffer and comforts them in a somewhat disturbing fashion. Upon learning of the breakdown and the Orpenoch King's power, Saeko was intent to survive. Saeko succeeded by allowing the Arch Orphenoch to completely evolved her and thus became his caretaker after he was defeated by Faiz.[11]
  • Itsuro Takuma / Centipede Orphenoch (琢磨 逸郎 / センチピードオルフェノク, Takuma Itsurō / Senchipīdo Orufenoku, 11-50): A prideful man who enjoys reading poetry. Though he acts calm, Takuma was very much fearful of Kitazaki most of the time, acting tough whenever Kitazaki's not around or is too injured to fight back. His repeated defeats during the series cost him a great deal of stability in Lucky Clover, becoming a whipping boy for Kitzaki to pick on. Eventually, after seeing the Arch Orphenoch kill Kitazaki and later evolve Saeko, Takuma ran off during the final battle and decided to join human society as a construction worker..[12]
  • Mr. J / Crocodile Orphenoch (ミスター ジェイ / クロコダイルオルフェノク, Misutā Jei / Kurokodairu Orufenoku, 11-19): A man of African descent who spoke perfect Japanese, usually seen with his pet dog, Chaco. He has three lives, though was able to regenerate from attacks that would kill normal Orphenochs. After being killed by Xeno Clash twice, Mr. J was reluctant to continue his pursuit on Faiz until Murakami threatened him with being named a traitor and what would come of Chaco if he didn't complete his mission. Though J was finally killed by Faiz's Grand Impact, Chaco ended up in the care of Keiko Kurata.[13]
  • Aki Sawada / Spider Orphenoch (澤田 亜希 / スパイダーオルフェノク, Sawada Aki / Supaidā Orufenoku, 26-40): Formerly of the Ryūsei School, he was mortally wounded by Kitazaki on the night of the school reunion and soon revived in Smart Brain experiment as an Orphenoch. Before his change, Sawada was a kind-hearted figure as Mari remembered him. Turning his back on his former friends and humanity, Sawada murdered Saya to get the Delta Gear in order to become the new member of Lucky Clover. He has a habit of crafting animal origami and lighting them on fire just before going on a killing spree while listening to rap music, with the flame dying out the same time Sawada killed the last person. He was eventually branded a traitor by Murakami for giving the Delta Belt to the surviving Ryūsei Students, before going after them one by one. No longer a member of Lucky Clover as he still had a shred of humanity left in him, Sawada was seeming killed by Takumi upon revealing his Orphenoch form. But Sawada survived and begins to regain a bit more of his humanity, eventually beginning to feel the Breakdown while taking Takumi's place in fighting the other Lucky Clover members, sustaining injuries from fighting all three of them and being hit by Kaixa's Gold Smash. Sawada eventually crawled out of the battlefield and saw Mari one final time before dying.[14]

No sooner than that happened that Morishita was attacked by the Flying Fish Orphenoch and became one himself. However, Morishita was overcome by the powers he gain and went insane, going on a random killing spree after being offended by what others thought of his sister. Takumi overcame his doubt in time and killed Morishita as Faiz with Sparkle Cut. However, Murakami told the pair that only one of them could join Lucky Clover, offering the position to the one who kills Kiba Yuji. By then, Toshio took Kaido's words to heart and got dirty by abducting Yuka, which vexed Kaido. Though he escaped retribution from the Renegade Orphenochs, Yoshio was killed by Kaixa's Gold Smash. Played by Masato Uchiyama (内山 眞人, Uchiyama Masato), who would later take the role of Shun Kageyama / Kamen Rider Punch Hopper/Kamen Rider TheBee 2 (影山 瞬/仮面ライダーパンチホッパー/仮面ライダーザビー, Kageyama Shun/Kamen Raidā Panchi Hoppā/Kamen Raidā ZaBī) in Kamen Rider Kabuto.[30]
