"We Break the Dawn" is a R&B/dance-pop song recorded by American singer-songwriter Michelle Williams. It was co-written by Andrew Frampton, Williams and Solange Knowles, and produced by Wayne Wilkins and Frampton for Williams' third studio album Unexpected (2008). The song was released as the album's leading single on the People.com website on March 31, 2008,[1] and was nominated for a New Now Next Music award for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Female Artist.[2]
Release and reception
"Stop This Car", the originally rumored lead-off single,[3] has since been confirmed as the second single but was changed in favour of the track called "The Greatest".[4] The song was sent to radio stations on June 23, 2008. The remix version of the song was produced by DJ Montay and features Florida rapper Flo Rida who raps in the intro and has a verse towards the end of the song.
In describing the forthcoming album, Hillary Crosley writes, "there's a clear move away from the gospel."[4] When the song premiered on People.com, Brian Orloff posted, "It's a hot new look and new sound."[1]
Accoring to U.K website Digital Spy it looks like "We Break The Dawn" single will be released in the U.K sometime in August, possible the 25th. Additionally the video is now uploaded on their website for viewing, they have also created a Michelle Williams blogspot. The video premiered on 4music on the 23rd of August.
Music video
The music video for the song was shot on April 23 in Los Angeles, California.[5] It premiered on May 20, 2008 and was directed by Phil Griffin. It features Williams dancing in a empty city with her background dancers.
Chart performance
In April 2008, Michelle Williams released "We Break the Dawn" digitally, and physically in July 2008. The song is currently climbing the Hot Dance Club Play, U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Airplay and U.S. Billboard Hot Singles Sales charts. It has reached the #1 position on the Hot Dance Airplay chart. August 2008 the single reached number ten at Brazil Hot 30 Dance Club Play which the single sold 35,000 copies went certified gold.
