The Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards, established in 1995, is given out by the American Academy of Poets for "outstanding translations into English of modern Italian poetry". The book award comes with a $5,000 book prize and the fellowship comes with $20,000. The book prizes and fellowships are given in alternating years.
"The fellowship is given to enable an American translator to travel, study, or otherwise advance a significant work-in-progress." The winner also receives a residency at the American Academy in Rome.
Translations may be published at anytime in the past — not necessarily in the year of the judging, but only books by living translators are eligible. The judges do not accept self-published books. Their decision is expected each March.
The fund for the awards was established through a bequest to the New York Community Trust by Sonia Raiziss Giop, a poet, translator, and long-time editor of Chelsea. The Trust selected the Academy to administer the award.
