"Don't Dream It's Over" is a rock song written by New Zealander Neil Finn and performed by New Zealand/Australian band Crowded House for their debut album Crowded House.[1]

"Don't Dream It's Over" proved to be a massive worldwide hit, reaching #27 in the UK, #8 in Australia, #6 in Norway, #2 in the US, and #1 in Canada. The chart-topping Canadian performance makes "Don't Dream It's Over" the only #1 hit by Crowded House in any country.
The music video for the song earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1987. After the band's demise in 1996 the song re-entered the UK charts and climbed to #25, two positions higher than the previous UK peak of #27 in 1987.
Legacy
Teen dramas, Degrassi: The Next Generation and One Tree Hill, both named an episode after this song.
The song was featured in the 1994 Stephen King miniseries adaptation of The Stand. It was also featured in the second episode "But for the Grace of God" in the fourth season of Medium.
In the Drake and Josh episode, "Skydiving", Josh (Josh Peck) is heard muttering the chorus of "Don't Dream It's Over"
In May 2001, Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the Best Australian Songs of all time, as decided by a 100 strong industry panel, "Don't Dream It's Over" was ranked as the seventh song on the list.[2]
"Don't Dream It's Over" was the very last song performed at Crowded House's "Farewell To The World" concert in the late 90's.

The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Classified in 2003, Less Stress in 1990, Paul Young in 1991 (gaining a top 20 UK hit single), Sixpence None the Richer in 2002 (which was released as a single), and Howie Day in 2005; Italian singer Antonello Venditti provided his own translated version of the song, "Alta Marea", which became a massive hit in Italian charts. Also, Sarah Blasko covered the song for the tribute album She Will Have Her Way in (2005) and performed it in front of a worldwide audience during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In 2006, A version of the song by singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson was included on an 80's tribute CD released free with Q Magazine.
Sixpence None the Richer version
"Don't Dream It's Over" was the second radio single released in promotion of the album, Divine Discontent, by Sixpence None the Richer. The commercial single release features the B-side, "Don't Pass Me By", which was recorded during the sessions for Divine Discontent.
