Dr. Naresh Trehan is an Indian surgeon and medical administrator. He has served as personal surgeon to the President of India since 1991, has received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. Dr. Trehan is the founder, executive director and chief cardiovascular surgeon of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center (EHIRC), which opened in New Delhi, India in 1988. Dr. Trehan has been president of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.

As chairman of Global Health Private Ltd., Dr. Trehan is overseeing the building of an integrated health care facility in Gurgaon, India, currently referred to as MediCity. MediCity will spread across 43 acres of land and is fashioned after institutions such as Mayo Medical School and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Collaborating with General Electric and other financial partners, MediCity aims to combine modern medicine with traditional medicine and holistic therapies.

Biography

After graduating from King George Medical College, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Trehan came to the United States with his wife, Madhu, for an internship in Philadelphia. He completed a thoracic surgery residency under Dr. Spencer at New York University.

From 1971 to 1988, Dr. Trehan held academic and clinical positions at the New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, New York City, and Veterans Administration Hospital, New York City. His pioneering work in the field of coronary artery bypass surgery was at the New York University Medical Center, where he performed over 3000 coronary artery operations. In 1988 he returned to India and started Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, which today is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, with nine state-of the-art operating rooms and 350 beds.^{[citation needed]}

Dr. Trehan is a Diplomate American Board of Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was appointed as Personal Surgeon to the President of India in 1991. Besides clinical work he has taken keen interest in training, education and research programs and has presented a number of scientific papers and chaired scientific sessions in national and international conferences. He recently quit Escorts to join Indraprasta Apollo Hospitals.
