Song |
"Womanizer" is a song by American pop singer Britney Spears. The song was recorded for her forthcoming sixth studio album, Circus.
Announced as the lead single from the album, "Womanizer" was first released to radio stations worldwide on September 26, 2008. It will be released commercially in the United States on October 7, 2008 through digital distribution. It will be released as a CD single on November 3, 2008 in the United Kingdom.
Production
"Womanizer" was produced and co-written by Nikesha Briscoe and Rapheal Akinyemi of Atlanta-based production team, The Outsyders.[1][2]
Release
The song was released to radio stations on September 26, 2008 in the United States.[1] The lyrics to "Womanizer" were posted on Spears's official website on Jive records a day earlier.[3] A week before the official premiere, on September 19, 2008 a low quality 40-second clip from "Womanizer" was leaked via Nashville's 107.5 The River.[4] Jive later released a statement to MTV stating that the clip was from the "rough mix" of the track, not the finalized single.[5] The DJ who played the clip was later suspended and fined $250,000 by Jive Records.[6] By September 27, the song had leaked in high quality format.
Spears's official site on Jive records has confirmed the song will be released by digital distribution through the iTunes Store on October 7.[7] However, on October 3, "Womanizer" was distributed in many European countries as a preview release. Publication notes reveal that the official release date remains October 7 and the single will be ineligible to chart in those countries until that date. In Italy after less then 24-hours of released the single reached #28 in the official iTunes Chart. Jive Records will reportedly release "Womanizer" as a CD single on November 3, 2008 in the United Kingdom.[8][9]
"Womanizer" debuted on New York City's Z100 on September 26.[10][11] It was played on Australia's 2Day FM shortly afterwards and only hours after the US premiere the single received it's UK radio premiere on BBC Radio One. In South Africa, on Septemeber 30, the song debuted on the Sasha Martinengo show on 5FM.
"Womanizer" debuted on the Mediabase airplay chart at #60 and climbed ten places in one day, claiming the #50 position with a 12.8 million audience and 895 spins.[12] "Womanizer" surpassed the record set by a previous Spears single, "Gimme More", at entering the Mediabase chart more rapidly than any other track.[13] "Gimme More" debuted at #78 in 2007 within the first 24 hours of its release, whereas "Womanizer" debuted even better at #60 in the same period of time. "Womanizer" entered the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart at the #78 position within three days of its radio release.[14]
Song information
Spears talked about the song in a live radio interview with New York's Z100: "It's basically saying, 'We know what you're up to.' It's about guys cheating on girls," "...It's a girl anthem. That's why I like it."[15]

Reception
Early reviews of "Womanizer" have received a mostly positive response from critics. Ann Powers of The Los Angeles Times described the track as "retro-futurism" that "takes a roller coaster ride via the snappy staccato beats crafted by the young Atlanta-based production team the Outsyders."[16] "It's clean and contemporary," the site said, "but also invokes the quick-witted style of vocal groups like the Andrews Sisters -- a style Brit's rival, Christina Aguilera, has mined to great success before. The highly manipulated vocal complements Brit's Mississippi Valley Girl diction; though she's been turned into a robot (again), she actually sounds engaged."[16] The track is also a slight departure from the Blackout tracks in which Spears' voice was heavily processed; however, "Womanizer" finds Spears singing "some tongue-twisting lyrics and doesn't heavily process Spears' vocals, meaning that she had to be engaged in the recording process – something that was not evident for Blackout."[17]
Cosmogirl editor Rachel Chang also stated her belief that 'Womanizer' is a future hit, writing that, "Brit knows her stuff, and as always, she doesn’t disappoint with her latest creation — a dance hit that’s bound to be a chart topper."
Billboard critic Jonathon Newan describes 'Womanizer' as an up-beat, ecstacy-filled, transcending tune, surely to triumph as a worthy Top 10 contendor. Spear's simplistic lyrics in conjunction with clever syntax, gives result to a sure summer topper."
Popjustice also gave the song a glowing review, stating that whilst the leaked clip was enjoyable, the full track "throws the whole thing into a brand new realm of amazingness." The review also compared the song to Spears' 2004 song, "Toxic" and Blackout's "Ooh Ooh Baby" and said the track, "lays a really strong foundation for the fully-realised comeback that didn't quite happen last time and it's hard not to think of it as a late contender for single of the year."
Daily News' music critic Jim Farber criticized the song, saying it is not the brilliant single Spears needs. Farber says, "From the sound of it, it should have been delayed indefinitely. Spears delivers the title word no fewer than nine times in a row, in a nagging tone meant to mimic the most irritating of schoolyard taunts."[18] Wellheart Music Journal gave the single a scathing review, calling the track a 'tired production', and having 'weak lyrics' with 'an exaggerated vocal'.[19] Matthew B. Zeidman of Hollywood Today wrote that the song "lacks any real structure and suffers from what can best be described as a musical monotone." Regarding the verses, Zeidman described them as "flat and unmemorable" and that the chorus "falls short of providing a memorable hook."[20]
Chart performance
"Womanizer" debuted on the Mediabase airplay chart at sixty and has since climbed to number twenty-nine, where it currently sits.[21] "Womanizer" entered the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart at seventy-eighth with three days of its radio release alone. In Mexico Spears broke a record on becoming the highest debut in the "Mexican Airplay Chart" for an international single, the previous record was held by Céline Dion for "Because You Loved Me" when it debuted at number ten in 1996, it also became Spears' first top ten single since "Everytime" which peaked at number three and first charting single since "My Prerogative."
"Womanizer" debuted on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 at eleven on the week of October 11, 2008.[22]
Music video
This article may be written from a fan's point of view, rather than a neutral point of view. |
The "Womanizer" music video takes place at the Elevate Lounge in the Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant located in downtown Los Angeles. One scene shows Spears' as a sexed-up waitress, wearing black boots, tight-black leather pants with an oversized black belt, a black leather vest with a white button-up cutoff vest underneath, and drenched in silver jewelry around her neck and wrists. Spears' left arm is tatted with red roses. The word "Womanizer" is written inside a broken heart on her upper arm and written again in black cursive a bit lower. Surrounded by dancers in similar outfits, Spears' walks through the restaurant carrying a silver platter with a glass of brandy on top. To complete her Gothic-waitress look, Spears' rocks a shoulder-length, dark auburn-colored wig and black nail polish.
Another scene shows a playful and flirty Spears' playing the role of a sexy secretary (a-la "How I Met Your Mother"), dressed in a black & white striped top, a knee-length leather skirt, black-rimmed spectacles and a short, black bob wig. Spears', wearing bright-red lipstick for the scene, plays with the love-interest in the video (wearing a black business suit and tie) - even photocopying his face in the office as she smiles to the camera.
But it's the sex-kitten Spears' in a revealing, grey satin robe, peeping black bra, and pink belly-button ring, along with her signature tousled long blond hair shows fans just why they fell in love with the pop-star nearly 10 years ago. Here, Britney is cooking breakfast for her pursuer after a night of passion, and brings the meal to her newly-found lover who happens to be wearing only white boxer-briefs at the table while the word "womanizer" flashes in the background. She then blows him a kiss, remembering that innocent, yet not-so-innocent, demure she displayed in her early days in pigtails and a school-girl uniform.
Britney is later seen wearing the man's black business-jacket and tie, along with a black hat and sunglasses inside a car.[23]
As was done for Spears's previous music video "Piece of Me", the video is set to premiere on ABC's 20/20 on October 10, 2008.[24]
Live performances
MTV UK, MSNBC and Simon Cowell himself have reported that Spears will perform "Womanizer" at the British reality television contest The X Factor at the end of the year.[25][26] This will mark her first return to the United Kingdom since The Onyx Hotel Tour in 2004. Alan Carr stated in an interview with Jonathan Ross that Britney Spears will be hosting an episode of The Sunday Night Project on Channel 4 in the UK.
