::Is there a need for a Space Colonization Portal? --[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 23:20, 31 July 2006 (UTC) |
|||
:::I would say no. This isn't a very large (wide-focus) wikiproject, and the status of space colonization isn't likely to change much in the near future (i.e. 1-2 years), so "news" is relative. [[User:Variable|siafu]] 23:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC) |

::::<EDIT>I created a [[Portal:Space_colonization|portal]] with an "Inactive" status and left a message for people who try starting a Portal for it. That way we can also plan ahead for a time when it becomes valuable to have a portal, and the framework is already in place. --[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 23:56, 31 July 2006 (UTC)--[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 14:19, 4 August 2006 (UTC) |

:There is an important difference between the wpspace template and the Space Colonization template. The wpspace template is for talk pages and project pages, while the [[Template:Space colonization]] is for the article pages themselves. I'll work on getting these templates up to speed and accurate. ==Addition of articles for the Sun, the outer planets and their moons== |
|||
I have reverted a series of articles about the colonization of the Sun, the outer planets and their moons to redirect to [[Colonization of the outer solar system]]. The new articles had no content and the [[Colonization of the Sun]] article is strong evidence, I think, against this being a misguided attempt to be helpful. As redirects they do no harm. I also reverted the addition of links to these articles in Colonization of the outer solar. --[[User:ArnoldReinhold|agr]] 02:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC) |

==Scope== |
|||
"It is not intended to cover robotic space exploration or historical manned spaceflight" |
|||
Just a question on how focused this project is. Why wouldn't robotic space exploration be covered, if it is being used to scout out possible new locations for colonies to exist? What kind of data would it need to send back to be analyzed? How many projects have been launched that contain data that may be used to determine the suitability of a locale for a colony? It sounds like the scope is the general concept of Space Colonization without getting into the leadup to actually beginning a colony. I ask because that is one of my interests in the general topic of Exploration, and was wanting to develop a section for the project regarding current overall plans underway, and featuring specific technologies that are being developed that can be used for the furtherance of Colonization. --[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 15:26, 30 July 2006 (UTC) |
|||
:I'd say that the caveat on robotic space exploration is there so as to prevent excessive overlap with other wikiprojects like [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Space Missions|Space Missions]], [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Mars Spacecraft|Mars Spacecraft]], and [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Unmanned Space Missions|Space missions]]. Of course, being a member of this wikiproject doesn't prevent you from working on anything you like, and I think that what you're proposing is definitely appropriate here. [[User:Variable|siafu]] 15:36, 30 July 2006 (UTC) |
|||
:Good to know. Thanks for taking the time - I'll be looking into those other projects too. --[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 01:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC) |
|||
::That last one was [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Unmanned Space Missions|Unmanned Space missions]], not intentionally a repeat of [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Space Missions|Space Missions]]. I actually got the link right, just not the text. [[User:Variable|siafu]] 02:08, 31 July 2006 (UTC) |
|||
::Yah - I noticed that. Seems like the whole Space topic could use some more organization. It can be tough to figure out what all is included. --[[User:Exodio|Exodio]] 22:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC) |

Hi - I decided yesterday that [[Colonization of Venus]] is going to be the next article I turn into an FA (assuming things all go well). Nothing sudden as making an FA usually takes a month or so, but I'll be working on it a lot so if anyone wants to help out with adding references or anything else they're more than welcome. I read that pdf by [[Geoffrey A. Landis]] two days ago and though I knew before about the temperature up at 50 km, I didn't realize that the pressure's the same as here nor that breathable air floats, and so I'm convinced that this idea needs to be put into the spotlight. I've started the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Space exploration|Space exploration]] WikiProject, but there's nothing there right now. My hope is that we will be able impliment the article assessment that's going on at the 1.0 editoral team, as they are trying to [[Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Work via Wikiprojects|Work via Wikiprojects]]. Over 100 other wikiprojects are already following suit; the articles within the scope of this project could greatly benefit from being apart of this.. thoughts? as some of you will have noticed, i've been tagging many article, under the broad topic of [[Space exploration]], with the tag {{tl|WP Space exploration}}. this banner has a built in assessment feature.. you can rate the articles quality (out of Stub/Start/B/GA/A/FA), and the importance (Low/Mid/High/Top). The quality has a pretty clear [[Template:Grading scheme|grading scheme]], but the importance is much more subjective. |
|||
anyway, to do this, for example, add <nowiki>{{WP Space exploration|class=B|importance=Mid}}</nowiki> to the Talk page. the banner also has a link to a pretty bot generated list (update once a day, around 10am UTC) of all articles with the Space exploration tag. so feel free to help out, and tag and assess some articles. :) also, when rating an article, you may feel a desire to justify your rating; if so, a comment on the Talk page with the heading "Assessment" seems appropriate. == Project directory == |
|||
Hello. The [[WP:COUNCIL|WikiProject Council]] has recently updated the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory]]. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at [[User:B2T2/Portal]], listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding [[:Category:WikiProject assessments|assessment]], [[:Category:WikiProject peer reviews|peer review]], and [[:Category:Wikipedia collaborations|collaboration]] are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. [[User:Badbilltucker2|B2T2]] 23:33, 25 October 2006 (UTC) |

== Wikipedia Day Awards == |
|||
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of [[Wikipedia:Esperanza|Esperanza's]] proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at [[User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week]] where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. [[User:Badbilltucker|Badbilltucker]] 16:53, 30 December 2006 (UTC) |

Colonization of Titan
Should Colonization of Titan be merged with Colonization of the outer solar system at least for the time being?
- Uniquely among the colonization entries, I think the one on Titan may be lacking in sources focusing specifically on it as opposed to the outer solar system in general. Thoughts? - Reaverdrop 05:16, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's a no brainer and should be done once the AfD process completes. I also think that the Asteroid section should be removed from Colonization of the outer solar system, since many asteroids are in the inner solar system. Also the outer edge of the asteroid belt pretty much marks the limit of where solar power power is practical, which is an important demarcation in terms of colonies. --agr 16:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- On second thought, I added some material to Colonization of Titan and it's several times longer than it was when it was nominated, and beginning to be referenced. It seems to have more supporting material than anywhere else in the outer solar system. Maybe it does not need to be merged after all... Thoughts? - Reaverdrop 22:06, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi
Hi guys, I just joined this WikiProject... I am very interested in space colonization and I have a lot of background expertise in the subject... Is there anything I could work on or anything?

Working on new article
Hi! Another editor and I are working on a new article that would be involved with this Wikiproject. Right now our colonization articles are specific to particular planets and Planetary habitability has a more life-in-general focus. A similar article was redirected a while back and we're hoping to make it a little better this time. If anyone is interested, we'd appreciate any advice! --Explodicle (T/C) 15:20, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Userbox?
So though I've edited wikipedia before, started articles, etc. etc., I've never created a template. I was wondering if anybody thought either of these would be appropriate userboxes for this group? Or if we even need one? Bsimmons666 (talk) 16:14, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Anybody? Bsimmons666 (talk) 15:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Boy, I was actually looking for a userbox. I love the second one. I have already added it to my userpage. --Cool Piplup (talk) 01:24, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Banner ad
I've put together a banner ad for the project. Check it out and let me know what you think before I set it loose. Image:Qxz-ad157.gif Wronkiew (talk) 04:46, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I hope you all liked the banner ad, because I added it to the rotation. You can add it to your user page with {{wikipedia ads|ad=157}}. Wronkiew (talk) 19:38, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
