'''John Edward Herbst''' (born on August 12, 1952) is an American diplomat.

Mr. Herbst was born on August 12, 1952 in [[Rockville Center, New York]]. Ambassador John E. Herbst currently serves as the Coordinator for the Office of Reconstruction and Stabilization (S/CRS) of the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Herbst is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, and holds the rank of Career-Minister.

Prior to his appointment as Coordinator, he served as Ambassador to [[Ukraine]] from 2003-May 2006, and Ambassador to [[Uzbekistan]] from 2000-2003. Mr. Herbst previously worked as the U.S. Consul General in [[Jerusalem]]; Principal Deputy to the Ambassador at Large for the Newly Independent States; the Director of the Office of Independent States and Commonwealth Affairs; and as the Director of Regional Affairs in the Near East Bureau of the State Department. Mr. Herbst has also served overseas as political counselor at the U.S. Embassy in [[Tel Aviv]] and at the Embassies in [[Moscow]] and Saudi Arabia. He joined the Foreign Service in 1979.

Mr. Herbst's awards in government include the Presidential Distinguished Service Award and the State Department's Distinguished Honor Award. He received a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from [[Georgetown University]]'s [[School of Foreign Service]] in 1974, [[Phi Beta Kappa]], and a Master of Law and Diplomacy, with Distinction, from [[the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy]] (Medford, MA) in 1978. He also attended the [[Johns Hopkins University]] School of Advanced International Studies Bologna Center. Mr. Herbst is fluent in Russian and has a working knowledge of Arabic.

Mr. Herbst is married to Ms. Nadezda Christoff Herbst and has five children.

==Service in Uzbekistan==

John Edward Herbst, of Annandale, Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister - Counselor, was nominated by President Clinton in February to be the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan. The Senate confirmed his nomination on September 8. Ambassador Herbst arrived in Tashkent on October 28, 2000 and presented his credentials to Uzbek President [[Islam Karimov]] on November 1, 2000. Ambassador John Edward Herbst left Uzbekistan on July 12, 2003.
