Revision as of 03:51, 10 November 2008

CheckUser evidence has determined that this IP address (or network) has been used abusively.
This address (or network) has been blocked temporarily or permanently to prevent further abuse.

In extreme cases, an entire network may be blocked to prevent an abusive user from continually changing their IP address in order to evade blocks or abusing multiple accounts. If you are a registered user and are seeing this message, please follow these instructions.

Administrators: CheckUsers are privy to confidential system logs not accessible by the public or administrators due to the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy, and therefore must be consulted before this block can be removed.  -- {Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you!}

Template:Do not delete

Attention Administrators:

Exercise extreme caution in blocking this IP address. As of 23 December 2006, T-mobile uses this IP for over (8,000 locations. Each location has approximately 30 NAT IPs assigned to it. That potentially effects an estimated 240,000 possible nodes. When considering blocking, It is not your average IP. It is not an open WiFi network either, but instead t-mobile collects personal identify information from every customer. Therefore serious abuse can be reported and traced through the ISP. When blocking be sure to provide diffs on this page to support the block and identify specific edits among a sea of different anonymous editors on this IP. This IP may even serve as the primary ISP IP for many editors.

Also try to be aware of Autoblocks that include this IP address. Keep in mind that an autoblock of this IP will simultaneously affect over 8,000 LANs throughout the continental United States so an autoblock on this IP address can potentially affect many other editors. This makes it especially important to avoid frivolous blocks. If an account block is necessary — and such a block therefore results in an autoblock of this IP address — we advise administrators to wait some time (miniutes or hours) and then lift the autoblock before the usual 24 hour period expires.

This should be an ideal candidate IP for Wikimedia’s XFF-RFC1918 Project using the entire private range 10.0.0.0/24. A request has been filed with ISP reporting.

Location Log

Wikipedia is trying to determine the extend of this shared IP address. If you're connected to wikipedia from a Tmobile hotspot and it shares this IP (208.54.95.129; check with whatismyip), then kindly add to the top of the list the city and state you're currently connecting from.

Remember to sign with four tildes (~~~~) for a time/date stamp.

Comments

A poster from this address claimed that this was a proxt for over 8000 T-mobile sites. You'd think a major shared proxy IP would have a less mundane PTR record than "m815f36d0.tmodns.net." Is this really a major proxy exit point? For example, 208.54.95.126 has a PTR record of m7e5f36d0.tmodns.net., 208.54.95.120 has a PTR record of m785f36d0.tmodns.net., and so on. -- The Anome 20:31, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think they're right. I restored the banner. I am a tmobile customer and my experience is that no matter where I am, the IP address always comes up the same. I've filed a request with IP abuse for them to look into it. I think that, if we're wrong about this, then the folks over there will let us know. As for the domain name attached to an IP like this one don't expect i to be something like "attack-me-cause-i-am-important.tmodns.net." Those types of domain names for something like this are usually frowned upon. Also it could be that tmobile uses those other IP addresses for other geographic regions of the globe. Or perhaps the 8,000 are divided across some other IPs. Or those provisioned IPs are waiting in reserve. The point is we don't know. Let the good folks over at abuse do their thing. --HardConcrete 22:59, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just posted to the location log here because I've seen this problem in the past too. However now the IP from this hotspot is 208.54.95.1 I know it's been 208.54.95.129 before because I can see my edits in the user contributions. Oh well perhaps they're trying to use obscurity for their security. --208.54.95.1 22:07, 26 December 2006 (UTC) ----- Same poster posting again from another hotspot. As I wrote in my edit summary, I now have doubts about whether I'd ever checked the IP address at that previous hotspot. That was a very small location so perhaps they use different IP addresses depending on the size of the hotspot or just some other povisioning method. --208.54.95.129 22:57, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked again

Welll I think it's great someone is trying to make Wikipedia aware of this situation. However, seeing as it's only been a few days and this IP is blocked again I guess it's not really working. I've got the message:

Autoblocked because your IP address was recently used by "I love boosters". The reason given for I love boosters's block is: "Cplot".

Well this "I love boosters" must be pretty important or destructive to block all of tmobile's hotspots. Nice work guys. You could at least provide the diffs requested in the administrator alert to let the rest of us know why we need to be blocked. I can't even edit with my long established account. Well I guess if it's only an autoblock it should last long. Is there any way to know when the autoblock ends?

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Autoblock of 208.54.95.129 lifted or expired. You should be able to edit, now; be warned that Cplot is a fairly persistent problem, and that this probably isn't the last time you'll have trouble like this. Sorry. Luna Santin 23:56, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | rangeblocks | unblock | contribs | deleted contribs) has asked to be unblocked, but an administrator has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock request while you are blocked.

Request reason: "How are we supposed to edit if we can't make an account?"

Decline reason: "Please create an account somewhere other than a T-mobile hotspot. You can create an account at home, at work, at your school, or ask a friend to create an account. This is a checkuser block an admins are not likely to undo it."

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read our guide to appealing blocks first and use the {{unblock}} template again. Abuse of the template may result in your talk page being protected.
