Fred is a channel on video-sharing website YouTube. The Fred channel is, as of November 16, 2008[update], the most subscribed of all time, with over 650,000 users subscribing to it.[1] The videos are centered around a fictional 6-year-old, Fred Figglehorn, who has a dysfunctional home life and "anger management issues" of his own.[2] Fred is played by Lucas Cruikshank, a 15-year-old from Nebraska, USA.[3] The first video on the Fred channel, which was registered on October 1, 2005,[4] was uploaded on April 30, 2008,[5] and within two months, the channel had 250,000 subscribers, making it the fourth most popular channel of all time.[2][3] There is talk of Fred being killed off at the end of Season 3.
Content
Cruikshank has described the channel as "programming by kids for kids".[3] The Fred channel was launched by Cruikshank on May 1, 2008 and is the fastest-growing channel in YouTube's history. The character has been described as a "post-modern Charlie Brown".[3] The Fred videos are usually two or three minutes in length, and feature a short vignette of an incident that has happened in Fred's life (titles include Fred Goes Swimming, Fred Loses His Meds, Fred Gets Detention).[6]
The series is intended as a parody of self-important video bloggers who, in Cruikshank's words, "think that everyone is so interested in them." Cruikshank believes that viewers either "automatically love Fred or automatically hate Fred, there is no in between".[7] Fred posts his videos to his YouTube channel, even though he is not supposed to be using his mother's video camera, or posting videos, or even having a YouTube account. The voice of Fred is altered to a higher pitch, "chipmunked" so to speak—producing a similar sound to the chipmunks from the TV show Alvin and the Chipmunks.[2]
The character lives with his recovering alcoholic mother, whose voice is heard often in episodes. (Fred communicates with all characters off-screen unless it is an animal). It is implied that Fred has been mistreated, but he frequently speaks of his love for his mother. According to "Fred Gets Babysat," Fred's birthday is sometime around late October because in the video at one point he says "My birthday is in like a month" and this video was originally uploaded on September 29. Fred's grandmother is mentioned as briefly caring for Fred while his mother was in rehab, on account of alcoholism. When his mother returns, in "Fred's Mom Returns", his grandmother leaves and his mother begins making him do chores such as picking up sticks. It is known that Fred has anger issues. Other frequently mentioned characters include Judy, who Fred has a crush on but whom he is despised by, and Kevin, Judy's boyfriend who bullies Fred. Bertha is apparently a really popular second grader who began socializing with Fred one day when both their moms were at the bar. She tells him to do bad things and made him play a "City of Ember" game in her basement. In one episode however, "Fred: A Star in his own Mind", other characters are seen such as people that work for him and fan girls (although this occurs in a dream sequence). Fred's favorite meal is a TV dinner. However, in one episode Fred's mom takes away his TV dinner privileges. Fred's father was mentioned in the episode "Father's Day", where we find out that Fred's father, who is supposedly a rock star, and is on death row in a mental institution. He also mentions being threatened by the supposed former owner of the Fred channel, who knows where Fred lives. Fred episodes typically begin with "Hey! It's Fred!" and include the catchphrases "Hackin'" (replacement word for freakin') or "Garnet" (a portmanteau of gosh and darn it). Episodes usually end with "Peace out, home dawg!" or "See ya next time!"
Music Video
