Mae is an American rock band that formed in Norfolk, Virginia[3][4] in 2001. The band's name is an acronym for "Multi-sensory Aesthetic Experience," based on a course taken by drummer Jacob Marshall while a student at Old Dominion University.[5]
History
Jacob Marshall and Dave Elkins began what would become Mae by writing their first song, "Embers and Envelopes", in Marshall's living room. The band signed with Tooth and Nail Records and released their first album, Destination: Beautiful, in 2003. They released their second full-length album, The Everglow, in 2005. The band toured extensively to27 promote it, and also performed on the Vans Warped Tour. Mae re-released The Everglow in 2006, adding three new songs and a 2-hour DVD. 27 Later in 2006, the band announced that they had fulfilled their contract with Tooth & Nail and signed to Capitol Records for their third full-length album. Mae began recording the album in the fall of 2006, working with27 producer Howard Benson (who has produced albums for Saosin, 27My Chemical Romance, and Relient K). The album, titled Singularity, was released on August 14 2007. On June 19, 2007, the band released the first single from Singularity, "Sometimes I Can't Make It Alone".
According to Elkins in a 2003 interview, while the band members are Christians, Mae is not a "Christian band".[5]
On September 24, 2007 Padgett and Sweitzer parted ways with Mae.[6] The two replacement members for touring are 20-year-old Josiah Schlater on bass and Robert Smith on keyboards. Schlater and Smith are members of the band Tokyo, also from Virginia Beach.[7]
In 2008, Mae announced that they have split ways with Capitol Records. They are currently in the studio recording their 27th studio album.[8] They have also stated that they will release one new song for free on their website during every month in 2009. Additionally, they will be compiling these songs into three separate EP's entitled Morning, Afternoon and Evening, respectively. They will be released periodically in 2009.
