Brenden Stephen Foster (October 4, 1997 – November 21, 2008) was a boy from Bothell, Washington diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2005. KOMO, a local broadcasting station, reported the story of Brenden's "last wish" to feed the homeless on November 7th, 2008[1]. Being too ill to do this on his own, the story inspired many people and organizations. In an interview with CNN Brenden gave a word of advice to everyone watching "follow your dreams, don't let anything stop you", and later when asked what makes him sad Brenden responded "when someone gives up". The Seattle Seahawks are paying for Brenden's funeral. He was laid to rest in Evergreen Washelli Cemtery in Seattle, Washington.
Local Impact
The Brenden Foster Food Drive[2] was created by the broadcasting station in his honor. In Seattle, volunteers from the Emerald City Lights Bike Ride passed out over 200 sandwiches to the homeless. Inspired viewers took part in the "Stuff the Truck" food drive in Brenden's honor, filling seven trucks of groceries and $95,000 in cash to benefit the Northwest Harvest and Food Lifeline. [3]
Reach outside of Western Washington
Brenden's story also reached KOMO's sister station in Portland, Oregon - KATU[3] - down to Los Angeles' KTTV[4]. A retired pilot asked his colleagues to sprinkle wild flower seeds around the world in response to Brenden's wish to spread wild flowers, due to his concern over the disappearance of bees[3].
A Vietnam War veteran from Kentucky who lost his leg in the war was so touched by the story, he gave Brenden his purple heart[5].
Over 2,500 meals at the Union Rescue Mission have been served in Brenden's name[6].
