"Circus"
Song

"Circus" is a song by American pop singer Britney Spears. The song was recorded for her sixth studio album of the same name. The song was written and produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. The song was announced as the second single by Spears' official website on October 31, 2008.[2]

Release

The song was officially be released to U.S. Top 40/Mainstream radio on December 9, 2008.[3] It has however received airplay prior to that date.[4][5]

Reception

Early reviews show that the single has received positive reviews from the media. Digital Spy said that "Circus is a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style and Timbaland thump.[6] Pop Justice said "Circus goes with massive thudding electronic R&B production and there's a lot of stopping and starting, including a built-in MTV-style dance breakdown segment.[1]

Live performances

"Circus" premiered live on Spears' 27th birthday (December 2, 2008) during a performance on Good Morning America.[7]

Music video

Confirmed by her manager Larry Rudolph, Francis Lawrence who previously directed the video for "I'm A Slave 4 U" as well as the 2007 film I Am Legend directed the music video.[8]

The video was confirmed by Spears herself on November 6, 2008 at the MTV Europe Music Awards, while on set shooting it. She was seen sporting a curled bob hair style.[9] An exclusive three-second clip was shown during a promo for her documentary Britney: For the Record.[10] A 30 second preview/teaser of the video was released by Britney's Jive Records-run YouTube channel on November 25 with a second being released on December 01.[11]

The video leaked on to the China video sharing website Tudou on December 3, 2008, although this was later confirmed that this was not the final edit of the video.[12] The finalized video was to be officially premiered on December 5, on Entertainment Tonight.[13] However, due to the leak and public interest, Entertainment Tonight and Spears' management decided to change the date of the world premiere to December 4.[14].

Critical response

Entertainment website Digital Spy described the video as "cheeky, seductive and more than a little bit ridiculous", and said that Spears "delivers some killer dance routines".[15] Unlike "Womanizer"" Australia's "The Inquisitr" gave the music video a positive review calling it "unexpected" and quoting "Spears looks fabulous in the video, its one of her best works yet."[16] MTV gave the music video a favorable review quoting "This is her best video to date, this is one of the hottest music videos yet to come!"[17]

PETA

PETA has criticized the music video, which they claim uses cruelly-trained lions and elephants. PETA director said: "Britney may think her life is a circus, but for the animals who are whipped, chained, and beaten to perform under the real big top, the cruelty is very real. She may be headed for a comeback, but when it comes to animals, she still can't get her act together."[18]

Chart performance

On the week of the release of Circus, the single appeared on several charts worldwide due to digital sales, given the fact that it had already been confirmed as the second single of the album. It debuted at number seventeen in Ireland and in Australia the song entered at fifteen.[19][20] Also, the song entered on the UK Singles Chart at thirty-two based on downloads alone.[21]
