The Beethoven film series is a series of six American films, in which the plot revolves around a family attempting to control the antics of their pet, a Saint Bernard.

Films

Beethoven

In Beethoven, the Newton family finds and adopts a Saint Bernard. The family, with the exception of the father, (Charles Grodin), becomes attached to the dog. Meanwhile, a veterinarian is planning to destroy Beethoven, but the family comes to his rescue.

Beethoven's 2nd

In Beethoven's 2nd, Beethoven sires a litter of puppies, and the Newton family tries to save them from the dame's owner, who alternatively wishes to destroy or sell the puppies.

Beethoven's 3rd

In Beethoven's 3rd, the dog is sent across the country in a recreational vehicle to attend a family reunion.

Beethoven's 4th

Beethoven, still with his actual owner's brother (Judge Reinhold), still manages to cause trouble.

Beethoven's 5th

Sara takes Beethoven camping with her crazy uncle.

Characters

  • Beethoven - the principle character of the series. He is a St. Bernard who was adopted by the Newton family in the first film.
  • George Newton - married to Alice, father of Ryce, Ted, and Emily. He owns a business that sells air fresheners. He was not to fond of Beethoven at first. He appeared in the first two films.
  • Alice Newton - married to George, mother of Ryce, Ted, and Emily. She appeared in the first two films.
  • Ryce Newton - George and Alice's oldest daughter.
  • Ted Newton - George and Alice's only son.
  • Emily Newton - George and Alice's youngest daughter.
  • Dr. Herman Varnick - a veternarian who plotted to kill Beethoven to test a new weapon.
  • Harvey and Veron - dognappers who worked for Varnick.
  • Regina - an antagonist of the 2nd film.
  • Floyd - an antagonist of the 2nd film.
  • Brillo - Missy's owner and Regina's ex-husband.
  • Richard Newton - George's brother; he first appeared in the third film when he took his family in an RV from Colorado to a family reunion in California.
  • Beth Newton - Richard's wife.
  • Brennan Newton - son of Richard and Beth
  • Sara Newton - daughter of Richard and Beth
  • Tommy and Bill - the antagonists of the thrid film who attempt to track down a DVD that ended up in a DVD that Richard rented in the third film.
  • Penny - Brennan has a crush on her.
  • Madison Sedgewick - daughter of Reginald and Martha and owner of Michealangelo.
  • Reginald Sedgewick - a wealthy software company owner.
  • Martha Sedgewick- Reginald's wife
  • Michealangelo - a well-trained St. Bernard dog that switched places with Beethoven in the fourth movie.
  • Johnnie Simmons - The Sedgewick's butler who held Michealangelo captive in order to attain ransom money fro mthe Sedgewicks.
  • Nigel Bigalow - Johnnie's hench man.
  • Sgt. Rutledge - owner of a dog obedience school that Brennan and Sara took Beethoven to.
  • Florence Rutledge - Sgt. Rutledge's wife.
  • Freddy Kablinski - brother of Beth and uncle of Sara and Brennan. Sara visited him durign the fifith film. Freddy is a cetified mechanic who lives in the small town of Quicksilver.
  • Julie Dempsey - Sherriff of Quicksilver
  • Moe and Rita Seilg - bank robbers who robbed several banks across the midwest in the 1920s. Their car crashed in Quicksilver lake and they were declared dead. However, it was revealed that they survived and moved to Canada.
  • John Giles/Selig - son of Rita and Moe Selig; he changed his name to Giles and moved to Quicksilver in an attempt to find the stolen money his parents hid somewhere in Quicksilver.
  • Cora Wilkens - an elderly lady who claims she saw aliens and says that they told her that Rita and Moe escaped.
  • Garrett - a 12 year old boy who helps Freddy, Sara, and Beethoven find the treasure.
  • Harold Herman - President of the Chamber of Commerce of Quicksilver.

Merchandise

A line of toys was produced in conjunction with the first two films, and some toys are available on an ongoing basis.

DVD releases

All films are available on DVD, with the exception of Beethoven's Big Break, which is awaiting release in a direct-to-video format.
