Jean Joseph Vaudechamp was born in Rambervillers (France) in 1790 and was a pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson. In the 1830's he spent his winters in New Orleans, Louisiana and was a leading portrait painter in the region. He died at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1866.
