"Breakout"
Song

"Breakout" is a song from American pop singer Miley Cyrus' second studio album, Breakout. The song was originally a demo track recorded by Katy Perry, who also sings backing vocals on Cyrus' version.

Promotion

Even before the release of the album, Cyrus presented Breakout for the first time at the Disney Channel Games 2008's opening ceremony.[1]

On July 25, 2008 Miley performed on NBC’s Today at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.[2] She discussed her new album and her breaking out of her Hannah Montana character. Also talked about what she looks for in a guy and what she always does before her performances.[2]

Critical Reception

The track was mostly well-received by the critics. In its reviews for the album, AllMusic described it as a "schoolgirl rebellion".[3] La Times noted that, compared to Cyrus' previous songs, Breakout "sports a slightly tougher, more guitar-based sound".[4] The New York Times was less comprehensive, saying "it hints at a decadent, school-free future" but they felt that it "appeals to both age groups".[5] According with Slant Magazine the album's title track "is a noxious Avril Lavigne knockoff—an anti-education screed filled with declarations like 'Every week's the same/Stuck in school, so lame!' and 'Tired of being told what to do/So unfair, so uncool!'"[6]

Chart Performance

Due to various live performances, Breakout received intense airplay in radio stations, and with the help of the digital downloads the song was a successful non-single song. In the United States, the song debuted and peaked at #56 in the Billboard Hot 100, making Cyrus third top sixty.[7] In Canada, it was more well-received then the U.S, peaking at #45 in the Canadian Hot 100, another top fifty for her.[8]
