Song |
"7 Things" is a song by American pop singer Miley Cyrus, and is the first single from her second studio album, Breakout. The song was released in May 2008 in the U.S and was released in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2008.
Background
"7 Things" was written by Cyrus, Antonina Armato, and Tim James, all of whom co-wrote Cyrus's hit single "See You Again" and a number of songs from Meet Miley Cyrus. Cyrus described the song as "therapy" for her, saying "[it goes] through all the different stages of what's been going on the past couple years."[1] She said the song's lyrics are "Miley going through, like, 900 emotions while I'm trying to write a song."[2] In the song, Cyrus "describes the pain of a recent breakup" by listing seven things that she hates about her ex-boyfriend.[3] She accuses the subject of having feelings for another girl, shown in the line "You love me, you like her". At the end, she alternatively lists seven things she likes about him. Cyrus, in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, said of the song's subject: "I want them to be upset. That was my point."[1] She also said that the song was "about who [...] they want it to be to." Of the Nick Jonas rumors, Cyrus said: "I think a lot of people do think it’s about Nick Jonas, and if they think it is, that’s fine, Nick is someone that was really important in my life, but I don’t hate him. It’s a good song and it’s fun and that's it."[4] Nick Jonas said, "I think it’s funny. Honestly, I’m not insecure, my friends aren't jerks—so it can't be about me"[4]
Reception
Billboard magazine called "7 Things" "a worthy chart contender" and described it as "an odd composite, sounding decidedly country between its youth-driven headbanger choruses".[5] The song "combines Avril Lavigne-style angst with dad Billy Ray Cyrus' country twang", according to People.com.[3] The Village Voice also made note of the Avril comparisons. The review states that Cyrus "guns for full-on vintage-Avril territory", but felt that the song was "boring".[6] According to one review, "7 Things" "mix[es] jangly pop verses with a raucous rock chorus, resulting in a weird but entertaining hybrid of Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn' and No Doubt's 'Just a Girl'".[7] Headline Planet described the song as a youthful "breath of fresh air". The reviewer added, "It is not strong enough to distance her from the female pop pack, but it is good enough to prove that she belongs."[8] The Los Angeles Times said that Cyrus "tries maybe a bit too hard to please all constituents, going from cheesy acoustic strummer to full-on mall punk" but called it a "catchy-enough song".[9]
Music video
The music video was shot in Los Angeles beginning May 30, 2008 with director Brett Ratner. [10] The video features Maiara Walsh (Cory In The House), Liana Liberato, and Parker McKenna Posey. Promotional pictures for the video were leaked on June 2, 2008.[11] The music video premiered on ABC on June 28, 2008, and appeared on Disney Channel the same day.[12] The video shows Cyrus singing against a white background with a band, and girls crying and showing their emotions. It appears that the girls, and Miley, are referring to an ex-boyfriend, and the girls lip-sync to Miley's singing when she is "confronting" the boyfriend. People have noted that many of the girls look younger than, or barely as old as Miley, which is cause for parent organizations to start honest dialogues about early teen and pre-teen dating. The video was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards but Cyrus lost to Tokio Hotel. On YouTube, the video has gotten over 57 million views and is the 16th most watched and the 5th most commented video on YouTube of all time. The video also shows Miley holding a picture of Nick Jonas with scribbles on his face.
