Soma Peries (ソーマ・ピーリス, Soma Pirisu) is a fictional character in the Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam 00. At her first appearance, she pilots the MSJ-06 II-SP Tieren Taozi, but eventually abandons it for one of the semi-mass produced GNX-603T GN-X units. In the second season, she is one of the two known A-LAWS soldiers (the other being Mr. Bushido) to be given a custom GNX-704T Ahead unit.

It is revealed later on in the series that she is in fact an alternate personality of the original Marie Parfacy (マリー・パーファシー, Marie Pafashi).

Outline

First Season

A "supersoldier" with the rank of Second Lieutenant. She was sent to the HRL's headquarters and introduced to Sergei in his goal to capture a Gundam. She had been enhanced by scientists from the Super Soldier Special Duty Organization. She is a designer baby, enhanced through experiments by the HRL's supersoldier division. She and Allelujah Haptism shared a mental connection as they were both experiments in the HRL. This caused her to go berserk in one incident and was later given a special suit to prevent this.

She holds a special grudge against GN-003 Gundam Kyrios pilot, knowing that he is an enhanced human who 'betrayed' his own kind when he destroyed the supersoldier research facility. After a recent battle in which Kyrios used the Trans-Am system to defeat her, she becomes unnerved by the idea that a 'defective product' could outmatch her 'superior' genes. She later calls Allelujah by an experiment ID number, indicating that she may have discovered his true identity.

She seems to view Sergei Smirnov as a paternal figure, because he may have been the first person to show any sort of care for her as a human being. During Episode 25, she even foregoes the chance of utterly defeating Allelujah, and instead leaves her GN-X to rescue Sergei from his own crippled GNX-603T GN-X; by doing this, Allelujah recognized her as Marie, someone from his super soldier past.

Second Season

Four years have passed since the final battle with Celestial Being; in this time Soma has been living with Sergei who has come to consider her as a daughter, so much that he has actually offered her to become his adopted daughter. She is tempted by the offer, but she also hasn't made a full decision about it as she feels that changing her name -a side effect of the adoption- could undermine her already fragile sense of identity. Later, after Celestial Being returns, Andrei Smirnov - Sergei's son - comes to recruit her into the A-Laws, an offer that Soma is somewhat forced to accept.

Soma goes to visit Allelujah Haptism, who was captured by the Earth Sphere Federation four years before, right after the end of the last Celestial Being's battle. In the cell Allelujah speaks to her as Marie and refers that he knows her, though she doesn't agree. Celestial Being then rescues Allelujah and Soma confronts him during his escape; he reveals to her her real name: Marie Parfacy. Hearing this, Soma suffers a strange flashback while Allelujah escapes in the Arios Gundam. However, Allelujah is determined to reclaim her back as soon as possible.

Along the course of the series Soma comes to face again Allelujah in battle and, during one of their battles, both Allelujah's Arios and Soma's GNX-704T/SP Ahead Smultron crash onto an island. While on the island Soma reverts to her Marie personality. Marie completely forgives Allelujah for all that he's done and decide to join him. When Sergei comes to pick Marie up, after a brief explication he decides to let Marie to the care of Allelujah and bids her farewell. Both Marie and Allelujah are rescued by Lockon Stratos who arrives in time to catch the two kissing. Marie wants to stay with Allelujah and so she joins Celestial Being.

Compared to Soma, Marie appears to have a somewhat brighter, less tormented -if not overall more positive- personality. Although she doesn't have an active role in the firsts battles following her entrance in the Celestial Being, she is rapidly accepted by the other members of the organization to the point that she is offered to perform some coordination tasks on the Ptolemaios bridge.

Personality

At first glance Soma is a cold-hearted person with no sense of tragedy or sadness. She has somewhat of a competitive personality due to being defeated by Kyrios's pilot numerous times and has somewhat of a hatred for the pilot. It is revealed that she is not as cold-hearted as she appears to be, such as when Hallelujah is about to kill but is saved by Sergei, after damaging Kyrios Soma chooses to care for Sergei rather than destroy Kyrios. In season 2 Soma has shown to be more sympathetic as she begins to develop a sense of conscience, causing to doubt herself as a person.

Marie's pesonality is far more different than Soma's, Marie is shown to be more gentle and kind, kinder than Soma as well being more optimistic. While Soma generally hates Allelujah, Marie on ther other hand loves him and claims to have been in love with him since they were kids, even Sergei notices that Marie is extremely different from Soma as such she expresses her gratitude for all Sergei has done for her both on her half and Soma's.
