John Daido Loori, Roshi (or just "Daido Roshi") (c. 1930) is an artist and first generation American Zen teacher. He is currently the abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery, located in the Catskill Mountains of New York. This monastery is also the mother-house of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, an American order founded by Loori in 1980.
Daido Roshi received transmission in both the Rinzai [1] and Soto [2] Zen traditions, and combines aspects of both in the Mountains and Rivers Order. He is a direct dharma heir of Taizan Maezumi, Roshi, and the author of many books on Zen Buddhism. He maintains a particular interest in using artistic expression as a way to communicate the teachings of Zen, continuing the spirit of the timeless aesthetic of the artless arts of Zen.
He began his work in photography at an early age, and went on to study extensively with photographer Minor White. He conducts photography workshops across the United States and has exhibited in 64 one-person shows and more than 125 groups shows, both in the United States and abroad. Loori, Roshi lectures on Zen, photography and the creative process at art centers, museums, and universities. His photography has been published in books, magazines and leading photography journals such as Aperture and Time-Life Photography, and he has directed, filmed or produced ten documentary works and several art videos that interweave poetry, music and visual imagery. His recent Mountains and Rivers video was winner of the Gold Award at the WorldFest Charleston International Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival.
Loori, Roshi's most recent work is the book The Way of Mountains and Rivers (to be released Spring 2009) and the film Water Speaking Water. Both are based on his translation and commentary on 13th-century Zen Master Dogen's Mountains and Rivers Sutra. Through prose, poetry and fine art photographs, The Way of Mountains and Rivers develops a 21st century thesis for an environmental consciousness that interweaves modern science and ecology within a moral and ethical paradigm. Following the same course, the film, Water Speaking Water merges visual images, natural sounds, and music into an expression of the voice of the mountains and rivers themselves.
Daido Roshi is also a trained scientist[3], a background that informs his strong advocacy for wildlife and environmental protection. Some better known students of John Daido Loori have been Enkyo Pat O'Hara and Chase Twichell (poet).
