The Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films - Animafest Zagreb initiated by the International Animated Film Association was founded in 1972 in Zagreb, Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia. The event is the second oldest animation festival in Europe. [1], it was born out of the success of Zagreb Animation School (Template:Lang-fr) and with some interruptions has been hold every 2nd year. [2]

Zagreb’s candidature for holding a permanent animation festival was accepted at the 1969 ASIFA meeting in London. The festival awards include prizes given in the Main Competition, Competition for Student Films, Children Films; Educational Films, Commercials, Music Videos and Films made for Internet.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, unique for animation film festivals was established In 1986. An award for outstanding contribution to the theory of animation was established in 2002. [1]
