SBS serves approximately 5,000 students from PK – 12. As a self-supporting agency of the Second Baptist Church of Houston, the school has access to nearly 1,000,000 square feet (100,000 m2) of educational and recreational facilities on a 56 acre, Memorial area campus.
The School Mascot is the Fighting Eagle.
History and Founding
In 1946-47, a group of Texans established an elementary school. On February 3, 1947, Second Baptist School opened its doors to 45 kindergarten students.
In 1974, the Middle School began with 6th grade and each year another grade was added to complete the middle school level. In 1979, the Upper School began with the 10th grade and by 1982, the school provided an instructional curriculum of grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.
Teachers such as Gladys Wood and Claire Towery are among the school's most notable educators by students, and faculty, throughout campus.
J. Brett Jacobsen, the school's headmaster, is seen as the figurehead in both academic and extracurricular affairs, given his intellectual persona and distinguished presence on the grounds.
Other noted academics at the institution include Phillip Sinitiere who has continually chaired the school's history department, teaching classes ranging from Modern American politics to European Developement. His trademark bowtie and love of all things intellectual mark his distinguished place on campus.
Within the past three years, speakers such as Michael Reagan, Oliver North, and Mary-Lou Retton have given distinguished addresses to the students, faculty, and alumni.
Garrett loves to shoot the three. I am scared of Coach Gottfried.
