Terrain

Cross Junction and its environs consist of rain-fed streams and springs. There are a few old farms in the area, mostly owned by families descended from the founding members of the community dating back to the days when George Washington first visited the land and surveyed it. It is the traditional home of the Shawnee who had a settlement and court at Shawnee Springs. Cross Junction has rolling farm land which is modestly priced. There are only a hand full of housing developments with Lake Holiday being the largest. The is no fire or EMS department in Cross Junction. The closet fire department is the Reynolds Store Fire Department which is 5-6 miles away and has an ISO rating of 9, so home owners insurnace can be expensive. The ISO or Insurance Service rating is how Fire Departments are rated on capabilities. it runs from 1-10. 1 is great 10 is the worst or non exsistant. The is rated on quality of equpiment, manpower, training, water supply, and various tool requiremnts to meet ISO standards. NFPA states that the first due area of a Fire Department shall be no more then 5 square miles. Fire Departments in Frederick County can exceed that standard by several miles.

Lake Holiday

Previously known as "The Summit", Lake Holiday is a gated community of about 400+ homes and 1000+ building lots. This is the primary residential area in Cross Junction, it is built around a large 240 plus acre manmade lake, from which the community derives its name. There are a great deal of vacant home and forclosers right now in Lake Holiday, fall 2008, like many parts of the country, so now is a good time to buy if you are looking for a private lake community to live in. Unlike other Virginia "gated lake communities" i.e. "Lake of the Woods" in Orange Va., it has no public safety service / fire and ems and relies on other outside communities in Frederick County Virginia which may take much longer for emergency response. There is a great deal of political strife in this community with fighting factions on the home owners association, which has greatly hurt community development. The community is awaiting a major Virginia Court decision which may dissolve the community as a gated community and the home owners association. This decision is to be handed down by July 3rd 2008, Virginia Senator Jill Vogel has tried to introduce legislation into the Code of Virginia, and thus interfere with the Judicial Process.
