Where Rainbows End is Irish writer Cecelia Ahern's second novel, published in 2004. It was titled Love, Rosie or Rosie Dunne in the US. The entire novel is written in epistolary structure in the form of letters, emails, instant messages, newspaper articles, etc. The book also reached number 1 in Ireland and the UK, and won the German CORINE Award in 2005.
Rosie and Alex had been best friends since they met in school at a young age. When Alex suddenly has to move away, Rosie is devastated and makes plans to move over to join him in Boston. However, Rosie becomes pregnant after getting drunk at her high school debs and cancels her plan to move to Boston. She raises her baby, Katie and continues to communicate with Alex through emails, letters and instant chats. They continue to deny their love for each other while going through marriages, lovers and divorces. And finally, Alex finally confesses his love (finally) for her in one final letter.
Chapter 1: Alex is invited to Rosie's 75th birthday party in the TV Lounge of the nursing home where they are both residents. The carers have organised a magician for the party which they believe will compliment the increased Valium dosage they have administered that week. Tempers flare when Rosie suggests Alex's new ladyfriend is a dog, to which Alex suggests Rosie's mum is stupid (deeply offensive since she has been dead for over 50 years.
Chapter 2: Rosie and Alex decide to skip the adult re-education classes they have been attending. Recent television adverts where adults can't even help their children to do basic Mathematics homework have left them feeling ashamed at their own limited arithmetic skills. Instead they score some heroin and are later found performing the disgusting "Sweet 16 my ar*se" sexual practice they learned in "younger, more deviant days". A real turning point in the novel, we hear of Phil for the first time...that charming rogue is having a baby.
Chapter 3: That Alex is a workaholic, ever since he got the promotion to be King of England. Rosie is plotting high treason because he's too busy to go ice skating now. Her design for the mechanical giant octopus is almost complete and she has purchased the required materials from some shady middle eastern types with beards. It's on.
