For one thing, it deals exclusively with laser procedures, totally bystepping "regular" pseudophakia, operative correction of strabismus and invasive therapy for recidivating retinal detachment. I agree - there is a total absence of discussion of retinal-vitreal issues - disorders, procedures, etc.

Moving stuff to 'refractive surgery'

Much of the material on this page was duplicated on Refractive surgery. IMHO, discussing refractive *and* nonrefractive surgeries here would make the page unwieldy; refractive surgery, and each of the other techniques mentioned here, can easily fill a page of their own. So I moved-and-merged most of the refractive-specific stuff from this page to refractive surgery; unfortunately that's turned this page back into a stub for the time being, for which I apologise, but it seems preferable to having two diverging articles on refractive surgery.--Calair 23:52, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

• I suggest keeping this page for a brief and general overview of various ophthalmic surgeries, then adding details of the various surgeries under their own pages or under Referactive Surgery, Glaucoma, Cataract, etc. Edwardian 04:13, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps one of the most glaring things missing is procedures and preparations. I'm perplexed as to how eye surgery can ever be done at all, since blinking seems to be an unavoidable reflex no matter how zonked out a person is...

Eye Surgery Heirachy

I came to Wiki seeking details on what I beleived to be 'Laser eye surgery' (and now understand I was actually seeking the broader Refrective Surgery) In researching i found the existing heirachy not very clear.

With specific reference to refractive surgery I beleive the heirachy should be similar to this. 'Eye Surgery' > 'Refractive Surgery' > 'Pages for individual techniques' (ALK, Lasik, Lasek, PRK etc)

I think this should be more of a placeholder page for example:

Simplify the existing:

Types of eye surgeries

   * Cataract surgery to remove an opacified lens which can be replaced with a plastic intraocular lens implant
         o Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE)
         o Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE)
               + Manual extraction
               + Phacoemulsification
         o YAG laser capsulotomy is used to clear the back implant surface of the cloudy posterior capsule which surrounds the lens implant

   * Glaucoma surgery to allow escape of excess fluid from the eye to lower intraocular pressure
         o Goniotomy
         o Iridotomy...

to:

   * Cataract surgery to remove an opacified lens which can be replaced with a plastic intraocular lens implant
   * Glaucoma surgery to allow escape of excess fluid from the eye to lower intraocular pressure
   * Refractive surgery aims to correct errors of refraction in the eye, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective lenses
   * Corneal Surgery
   * Vitreo-Retinal Surgery
   * Strabismus Surgery
   * Oculoplastics

And putting the individual version on a deeper level. Alternativley maybe a better navigation contents summary nearer the top with expalainations of each type further down.

What do people think of heading more that sort of direction?
