Farringdon Community Sports College is a Comprehensive School in the suburb of Farringdon in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The school is a specialist Sports College
The school was built along with the estate of Farringdon in 1956. Over decades the school has undergone a number of changes, including the construction of new blocks of classrooms and a state-of-the-art sports hall. It currently has 885 students.
The Community Sports College acted as the main secondary school for the suburbs of Farringdon, Doxford Park, Silksworth and East Herrington. It's catchment area was reduced in 2003 following the completion of the Church of EnglandVoluntary Aided Venerable Bede School in Tunstall.
In 2002, the school became the site of the Farringdon Jubilee Centre which is a community centre of the residents of Farringdon, partly-funded by the school itself. The building includes, among other things, training rooms, computers and a crèche. It is used to deliver training and courses to local residents, and to act as a meeting point for local residents and community groups. It hosts a regular community day 4 times a year, hosting the army, the RAF and many other organisations there.
A famous person to have visited the school is Kelly Holmes who visited in early June 2007 to promote an athletics day.
Following the Education Act (2002), Farringdon became a City Academy specialising in Sport, which had always been a focus of the school in the past. Formally, it became known as a Community Sports College. As a result, floodlit tennis courts and a pavilion with dance studio and a large multi gym have been built.
