History

Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences

Since late XIX century, the idea to create an university in Cali had been a dream for the people of the city and the department, and was continuously discussed and mentioned in the local newspapers. At the time, the only superior education degrees awarded in the department where handed by the Santa Librada College in Cali and the Academic College of Buga, which focused in the liberal arts. In the 1940s, the necessity for qualified professionals that could supply the demand of the new industrial sector of the Valle del Cauca, made clear that an institution whose focus was the scientific and technological instruction, was of strategic importance for the development of the region. Although the idea of the creation was met with skepticism, the Universidad del Valle was established by the ordinance number 12 of June 11, 1945, by the Departmental Assembly as the Univesidad Industrial del Valle (Industrial University of Valle). The leaders behind in the establishment of the university were Mr. Tulio Ramírez, who would become the first rector of the university, and Mr. Severo Reyes Gamboa, the departmental secretary of education at the time.

The university begun its labor in 1945 in a small house located in downtown Cali, with the Faculties Agronomy, Commerce, and Infirmary [4]. In 1946 the Faculty of Chemistry was established, followed by the Faculties of Architecture in 1947, and in 1948 the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, which in 1949 changed its name to Electromechanical Engineering. At this early stage, the university faced its first financial crisis, situation that was preceded by the destitution of the rector Mr. Ramírez in 1949, and that almost ended in its closure in 1950 [5]. The financial difficulties of the university would be recurrent situation in its history

After the crisis was overcomed, in 1950 the Faculty of Medicine was established, and begun its labor in 1951 in the campus of the Santa Librada College. Then, in 1954 started the construction of the San Fernando campus for the Faculties of Medicine, Infirmary, and Architecture. This same year, by the ordinance number 10 of 1954, the university changed its name to Universidad del Valle, established as part of the university government an Academic Council and an Administrative Council, the later one with the participation representatives of different sectors of the community.

In 1955, under the tutelage of rector Mario Carvajal, the university opened the School of Graduate Studies in Medicine, and its publishing house was established under the name of Biblioteca de la Universidad del Valle (University of Valle Library). In 1947, the university begun its technical and further education programs with the establishment of the schools of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Engineering Auxiliaries in Topography and Roads. At the end of the 1950s, the university counted with five Faculties and three Schools, 556 students, 174 professors, and 159 persons in the administrative staff. Its endowment ascended to approximately COP$20’000.000.
