Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School is a six-year comprehensive regional public high school that serves students in seventh through twelfth grade from Borough of Westwood and the Township of Washington, in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Westwood Regional School District.

As of the 2006-07 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,099 students and 99 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 11.1.[1]

Awards & Recognition

The school was the 56th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 314 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools. The school was ranked 81st in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which included 316 schools across the state.[2]

Curriculum

Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses offered include AP Spanish Language, AP French Language, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Microeconomics, AP United States History, AP European History, AP Art History, AP Studio Art and AP Psychology

Extracurricular Activities

Woodington Players

The Woodington Players is the theater and drama group at Westwood High School. The name comes from a combination of the two towns that send their students to Westwood High School. West-wood and Township of Wash-ington make up the name. The group was founded by former English and Dramatics teacher Jerome Hurley. The group was very small and put on two dramas in the fall and spring. They performed in, what was then the Little Theater, The Jerome Hurley Theater. Since Hurley's retirement, new English and Dramatics teacher, Donna Bialkin has directed over twenty shows. Bialkin directed the first musical at Westwood in the Campbell Auditorium. Since then the Campbell Auditorium was reserved for band and choir concerts and major assemblies.

The Woodington Players have grown in popularity and have received many awards from the Paper Mill Playhouse.

Such productions include: The Pink Panther Strikes Again, The Wiz, To See The Stars, Crazy for You, To Kill a Mockingbird, City of Angels, M*A*S*H, Guys and Dolls, The Man Who Came To Dinner, Once Upon A Mattress, Never Mind What Happened, How Did It End?, Into The Woods, Done To Death, Anything Goes, 12 Angry Jurors, and Thoroughly Modern Millie

The Woodington Players also present a show of senior directed One-Act Plays in the spring. Two of these shows a year are selected to perform at the Bucks County One-Act Festival at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

Athletics

Westwood Regional High School Athletic Teams are called the Cardinals. They wear school colors Scarlet, White, and Black. Since the schools origin, the colors were scarlet and white. Only recently has black become an official school color

The Westwood Regional High School Cardinals compete in the Bergen County Scholastic League (BCSL) American Conference, made up of private and public high schools located in Bergen County and Hudson County.[3] The league operates under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

Westwood High School recently won two out of the last three sectional football championships. The most recent being on December 2, 2006, when the Westwood Cardinal Football Team went to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to play for the NJSIAA State Sectional Football Championship. They played the Indians of Pascack Valley High School in the North I Group II finals, beating them 9-8.[4]

Westwood High School is known for its wrestling team under the coaching of Mike Attanasio.

The Boys Spring Track team won three consecutive County Championships from 2004-2006. In the Spring of 2005 the team when undefeated in Bergen County, and won the North I, Group II State Champion by a record margin.[citation needed]

On March 5, 2007, the boys' basketball team played in the North I, Group II state championship, falling to Pascack Hills High School by 66-65 in overtime, in a game played at River Dell High School.[5][6]
