Olivier Ameisen (born June 25, 1953) is a leading French-American cardiologist who currently is a visiting professor of Medicine at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He was a professor at Cornell University and an associate attending physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital when he opened a successful cardiology practice in Manhattan in 1994.[1] He suffered from Alcoholism and ultimately returned to Paris. After hearing anecdotal reports that the muscle relaxant, baclofen was effective at reducing the cravings of addictions, he experimented on himself, and proposed a new treatment model for addiction based on animal data, and his own experience. In 2004, he published his results and his model of treatment in the medical journal Alcohol and Alcoholism. In that paper and in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), he called for clinical trials to test elimination of craving using baclofen at high-dose. In 2008, he wrote a best-selling book, "The End Of My Addiction", Le Dernier Verre (The Last Glass), describing his experience.[2] His treatment model is now in widespread use, despite the fact that randomized trials have not been completed.
