Coneheads is the title of a 1993 movie based on the Saturday Night Live sketches about the Coneheads. The film was directed by Steve Barron and produced by Lorne Michaels. As was the case with the previous SNL skit-inspired film The Blues Brothers, Coneheads has been said to have made an "accidental" or "unintentional" political statement or social commentary about the nature of the immigrant experience in America, the filmmakers' ostensible intent being merely to entertain.[citation needed]

The film stars Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin as Beldar and Prymaat Clorhone (who later Anglicize their Remulakian surname to "Conehead"), parents of Connie (Michelle Burke, taking over the role played by Laraine Newman on SNL). Michael McKean and David Spade play INS officials; also appearing are Sinbad and SNL alumni Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Tim Meadows, Jon Lovitz, Peter Aykroyd, Tom Davis, Garrett Morris, Chris Farley, Laraine Newman, Kevin Nealon, Julia Sweeney, and Adam Sandler.

Other supporting cast members include Jason Alexander and Lisa Jane Persky. Alexander's Seinfeld co-star, Michael Richards, makes a cameo appearance, as do Eddie Griffin, Joey Lauren Adams, Parker Posey, Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Carey, Dave Thomas, and Tom Arnold.

The movie largely took place in Paramus, New Jersey, with scenes also shot in New York City and the New Jersey slums of Jersey City, and Wrightstown.

Plot

The film follows the adventures of the family - whose ship, as part of an advance scouting mission for an invasion, is shot down by an F-16 fighter-interceptor of the New Jersey Air National Guard, and they try to assimilate into American society and pursue the immigrant's American dream. At the end Beldar is allowed by an INS agent to remain on Earth provided Beldar can exceed in a profession that no one else can.

Trivia

  • The gloves that Beldar uses to ride his motorcycle are the same ones that would later be used by Aykroyd's character Vic Frohmeyer in the 2004 movie Christmas with the Kranks starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis.
  • Scenes featuring Colleen Camp, Ellen Cleghorne, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Conan O'Brien were filmed but cut.
  • Dan Aykroyd took his daughter (Danielle) to see the film being made, and she was so fascinated by the conehead costumes she asked for one of her own. She was cast as Connie age 3 so she could get her own cone.
  • Toward the end when Beldar asks Ronnie if he could have 55 words with him, he does, in fact, say 55 words.
  • The fireworks scene at the football stadium was filmed on the football field of Paramus High School.
  • The French representatives of UIP took great exception to the Coneheads disguising their extra-terrestrial origins by passing themselves off as being French, and insisted that all such mentions be removed from the dialog. This demand was declined.
  • Laraine Newman who portrayed Laarta was the original Connie Conehead on "Saturday Night" (1975).
  • The shiny card with the Alien Symbols on it that Michael McKean's character finds in the Coneheads' trailer is a diagram showing the escape-routes out of a Conehead Craft in the event of an emergency landing.
  • In the German version the voice of the Highmaster is dubbed in a way to caricature the voice of the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl.
