Shane Murphy is a 33-year-old American sea captain employed by Maersk. He was the second in command of the MV Maersk Alabama during the attempted hijacking attempt in April 2009. He is a 2001 graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.[1] He participated in the crews actions which prevented the takeover of the ship during which Captain Richard Phillips was captured.[2]
