Major General Hayelom Araya is former a member of the TPLF which is the core member of the alliance called EPRDF. As a commander of EPRDF forces, General Hayelom led his forces to northern Showa province and later marched to Addis Ababa coming out victorious in 1991. He later become one of the military leaders in the defence force of the provisional government of Ethiopia.
General Hayelom was assassinated by an Eritrean business man in Addis Ababa in a restaurant bar in 1996. In May 2008, the Late General Hayelom Araya Monument was unveiled in Shire town, Tigrai Ethiopia which is his birth place.
