Act II will be the second album by indie rock band The Protomen, and the follow-up to the band's self-titled debut. The album will also revisit the Mega Man-inspired rock opera concept from the band's first album, and will function as a prequel to the first release, focusing on the relationship between Thomas Light and Albert Wily before Wily's takeover of the city that functions as the story's primary setting.
As of April 2009, recording for the album has finished, and mixing is in progress.[1]
Announced Tracks and Plot Information
The only tracks confirmed to appear on Act II so far are "Breaking Out" and "Father of Death" (the first single). A demo for "Breaking Out" was released by the band on August 29, 2008, to promote the album [2] -- Jerry "Tycho" Holkins of Penny Arcade commented favorably on the demo and on the band as a whole [3]. "Father of Death" was released as a seven-inch vinyl single (including a cover of Robert Tepper's No Easy Way Out as a B-Side) at a show on November 8th, 2008 [4].
No release date for Act II has been officially announced. The staging associated with "Father of Death" at live shows [6], as well as its promotional poster [7], suggest that the character of Emily Stanton is the love interest of both Light and Wily, that Wily murders her using a Sniper Joe robot when she refuses to reject Light, and that Light is subsequently framed for the murder.
It is not currently known if Act II is the actual title for the album, or a working title.
Release Of The Breaking Out Demo
On August 25, 2008, at around 2:21 PM EST, a member of the official forums for The Protomen by the name of "NoHeroesLeftInMen" posted a thread containing a link to a 96kbit/s MP3 of the studio version of "Breaking Out" (The link and post has since been removed, but the thread still exists)[5]. This was met with much debate as to the identity of the poster. In the end, the band member by the name of Commander made a post stating that it was not a member of the band that had posted this track, and that they had a good idea of how the track got out, appropriate measures were being taken, and rather than having the low-quality MP3 floating around the internet, they released a 192kbit/s MP3 of the demo of "Breaking Out". A day later, "NoHeroesLeftInMen" made another post, describing the manner in which he got the MP3 and apologized to The Protomen for releasing these tracks early.
