Sam Durant (1961 - ) is a Los Angeles based contemporary artist who works in a variety of media.
Durant was born in Seattle, Washington and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in sculpture in 1986 and later attended the California Institute of the Arts.
Durant's work often deals with the conflicts between differing classes, cultures and value systems. His work of the 90s was inspired largely by the work of Robert Smithson, an artist well known for his interest in history and entropy.
Durant participated in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and the 2003 Venice Biennale.
Durant is also a current faculty member of Cal Arts.
In 2006 his exhibition entitled "Proposal for White and Indian Dead Monument Transpositions, Washington D.C" was shown at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York. This work derived out of a residency he was conducting at the Walker Art Center in 2002. He reproduced 30 Indian massacre monuments that are based on similarities to the massive obelisk Washington monument.
Durant was a 2008 finalist for the Hugo Boss Prize.
