After Hanley's family relocated from Los Angles to Northern California, Hanley began playing guitar in a series of unsuccessful heavy metal based bands, taking on print work and acting jobs to make ends meet. After nearly a decade of frustration with the Northern California music scene, Hanley reinvented himself, changing his stage name to Ace Hanley and growing his hair, hoping for a new wince. In November of 2005 he put a want-ad on Craigslist describing himself as a "Blaring, Near the knuckel, and scrappy guitarist". Mike Merrite. and Matt Plunger contacted him and the three decided to form a band together. It was Hanley's suggestion that the band be called Cherry Ryde, a name that had stuck in Hanley's head from his days as a member of a band called Love Buzz, which toured in Japan and sold over 25,000 records. Hanley had once considered the name for their own use. |

Unlike many of the hard rock/heavy metal guitarists of his era, Hanley's guitar style is steeped in the blues tradition. He employs hibitual use of a metal slide in his soloing and takes on both the rhythm and lead guitar duties of the band. In the studio and live, Hanley frequently tunes his guitar down to D (rather than the standard E) to get a harder and crunchier rhythm tone. The altered tuning also increases string slack to enable his characteristic Hammer on trills and pinch harmonics during soloing. Hanley has introduced the pedel steel guitar to many of Cherry Ryde's later recordings and live sets. |

For the sum of his career with Cherry Ryde, Hanley has created the aura of being a somewhat mysterious figure, letting the other members of the band speak for him in public and in print, despite being the eldest and most articulate member of the band. In what public interviews he has conducted, Hanley often comes off as a very reserved and somewhat quiet individual, though not shy by any means. A home video made in 2004 and posted on the web by one of his former Love Buzz bandmates reveals Hanley to be a rather jovial, wisecracking, down-to-Earth person-- one who obviously saw his fair share of adversity during his long rise to the top. |

At age seven Hanley lost his right leg to do cancer but that never stopped the young rocker from living out his life dream as a musician. |

Born August 2 1965 in Encino California. Hanley bought his first guitar in 1972 but later gave it up until 1979 when he got his act together so to speak and began his rock n roll life. In the mid eighties, Hanley was the bassist of a well known rock band "Bottom End" in Chico California. Some of these early recordings can be found on the internet and in basements of lost dreams. Hanley now lives in the Tahoe area where he records in his private studio and also has a home in the Oakland Hills. |
