== Thanks so much! ==

Hi :)

Thanks so much for your links and help. I have been making my way through the tutorials starting with the "how to create an article" "citations" and "formatting" ones, but the bit of info on how to delete an article was just buried very very deeply! Thanks for giving me the instructions for future reference! Have fun and best wishes!

ようこそ!

Uhmm.....

Thanks for the ideas and help but, i actually AM RogueMad2, just some idiot hacked my account so i created a doppelganger for my new account. Thanks Rögue Mad 2 09:16, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, well... you placed that helpme on the talk page of RogueMad2 (talk · contribs), and at the time you were logged in as RogueMad2 beta (talk · contribs). (See diff).
When you left me this message, you were still logged in as RogueMad2 beta (talk · contribs) (diff), but you signed your name as RogueMad2 (talk · contribs).
I hope you can see why this is a problem?  Chzz  ►  09:24, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Guenther

Dear Chzz,

Thank you again for taking time with my poor project. I had to get Mr. Guenther to tell me where I might find outside sources concerning his birth and life and he did get me to the Directory of a leading literary magazine.

I have changed the entry and deleted some more things which Mr. guenther is trying to get citations for---such as his degrees and medals. (Most of the medals he says might not be sourceable and will have to go but he asks me so I ask you: he gave me that info based on fellow Marines listing such medals on wikipedia, how did they verify same).

Did I improve the article and next?

Mark Kohut —Preceding unsigned comment added by MKohut (talkcontribs) 15:27, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember to 'sign' your posts by putting ~~~~ at the end.
As I explained before, the article still needs a lot more references throughout - for example. how can I verify that he was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1944? Same goes for all the facts.
The first reference to www.pw.org is not valid, because it was written by the subject, and is thus a self reference. Also, it is important to use correct inline references, and not to put external links within the body of the article.
There are far too many external links
The list of poems is probably unneeded, or perhaps some examples could be given in a paragraph format, if they are notable.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  15:40, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Chzz. Thanks. I am awaiting other places to verify his birth and place of birth....Re: PW.org.....

This self-reference did need to be 'accepted' by Poets & Writers' mag. Which is a long-running major literary periodical. They verify somehow, with calls to college or other orgs referenced by the author, I do believe. Should I get verification that they do that?

Otherwise, I do not see how, since birth certificates and places where one lived when born are not online, any entry can be begun. Does the author need to have had a biography written about him, where we can assume the biographer did get these facts right?

If I cannot source those details properly, then I must just list his name and books and a few other links?

I will eliminate some external links. I thought they showed enough 'reality' to substantiate the non-advertorial nature of Guenther's achievements.

I will eliminate the medals, also unsourceable as mentioned.

Thank You,

MKohut (talk) 14:20, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Poets and Writers; if that is the case - that they verify facts - and if that can be shown, then perhaps that reference could be a reliable source; I'm really not sure. Because it was clearly written by the author, it screamed out at me as a self-reference; if you want to check on it, I suggest asking on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard.

Other authors (and bios in general) usually do find a reliable source with DOB etc - often the information is provided in an interview piece in a newspaper, or a book about the author. Of course, there are many articles on Wikipedia that lack such things, but again, that is a problem to be addressed, rather than a defense to 'add to the problem'; I often recommend that writers look at featured articles as an example of how things 'should be done'; for example, in this case, perhaps James Robert Baker, Nigel Kneale, Mario Vargas Llosa, William Gibson, etc. I'm not indicating that the article needs to be raised to these exalted standards; just that they might give ideas.

Indeed, it is often only possible to have short articles, if sources are not available. A short, factual, balanced and well-cited article is far preferable. It can always be expanded at a later date.

Good luck,  Chzz  ►  14:58, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chzz. Thank you again. In remaking this article, I reread and learned that an interview cited--from 2007 by someone at a major (enough) university, gave Guenther's birth and place, etc. So, I have used that to verify beginning basic facts. I am also checking with Poets & Writers Magazine, just to educate us all.

I condensed poetry links---to the two major issues. I dropped his medals' listing.

I created, half-created proper footnoting within the body---but I seemingly am too stupid to figure out how to get the number of the footnote to match the name of the source. I will reread the directions and try again later.....tired......lotsa detail in the doing.

You are such a prompt responder. Must be 'steady volunteer work' for you.

MKohut (talk) 16:54, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chzz. I had used poet David St. John as a model for this, but it was not the best choice it seems.

MKohut (talk) 16:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed up the references, added cite tags, used named references, and a few other bits. I'll try to work on the article more soon. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:52, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Chzz. You shouldn't have.....done so much. I was going to reread ALL the directions for citations and do it right. I finally remembered that the initial coding needed to be much fuller than I had done.

Thank you again.

MKohut (talk) 14:16, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the introductory note.

I actually have a question. How do I upload a picture onto someone's page. Wikipedia won't let me. They say I'm not authorized.UncleYoface (talk) 18:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can't upload pictures to Wikipedia until your account is autoconfirmed, which means 4 days and 10 edits; however, you probably don't want to. If the image is copyright-free (or your own and you are happy to give up copyright), then you should upload it to Wikimedia commons instead, at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload
Anyone can upload there; just follow the instructions - and that's where free images should go.
For more info, see WP:IMAGES. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  19:03, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you nominate my article for deletion?

I worked for a very long time on that page. For you to delete it because you did not consider the sources to be reliable, I feel, was very disrespectful. Show me a source that isn't reliable and I will show you somewhere in Wikipedia where that source has been used as reference in other articles within Wikipedia, as I've checked all this out ahead of time. If it is not found elsewhere in Wikipedia, however, I will remove that particular content. But to delete the entire article was unnecessary and far too done hastily.--Jklein212 (talk) 03:13, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that you feel the way you do, but it was in no way disrespectful. It is not 'your article' - see WP:OWN.
I appreciate the work that you have put in to the page; I also work very hard to improve Wikipedia. I began editing the article, and realised that information contained within it was not supported by appropriate sources. First, I tried to find suitable sources. When I was unable to do so, following the Wikipedia policies that have been agreed by consensus, I removed the unsourced information from the biography. I explained my actions in both my edit summary, and on the talk page of the article.
When I had removed the unsourced information, I realised that there was very little left. I then searched on reliable news sites, and was unable to find a single source to support the very basic information - ie the Date of Birth, the job, etc. Therefore, with an unsourced biography of a living person that did not assert notability (per Wikipedia:Notability (people)), I nominated it for deletion.
I did not 'delete the article' - I merely nominated it for deletion; there can now follow a 7-day discussion, where any and all interested editors can discuss the issues. If we're able to make the article sufficient to pass the policy requirements, I will be perfectly happy for it to remain on Wikipedia.
Regarding other articles with unreliable sources - all I can say about that is, we're working on it. If I come across other such articles, I will act in the same manner. Please see WP:OTHERSTUFF.
As regards my actions being hasty, in respect of BLP articles, I won't reiterate the policy - instead, here is a quotation from the founder of Wikipedia on the topic;

Template:Jimboquote

*Jimmy Wales (2006-05-16). "Zero information is preferred to misleading or false information". WikiEN-l electronic mailing list archive. Retrieved on 2009-04-08.

I will be very happy to help improve the article in any way I can.
If you have any concrete policy-based argument for keeping the article, I suggest that you make your points in the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonathan Hay (publicist) - where your opinions are just as valued as mine, or those of any other editor.
I'm truly sorry if I have upset you in any way; my intent is to make Wikipedia better, and nothing else. That's why I helped you before (with the 'hatnotes' and other help), and that's also the same reason why I nominated the article for deletion. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  03:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I do understand where you are coming from. I only referred to the article as being 'my article' because I created the page and have put much effort into it, but I did not literally mean 'my article'. I do feel that this is a very notable individual and would be a helpful Wikipedia article, so I would like to attempt to edit it appropriately. I will argue my case in the deletion review page, but if they agree with you and the page is then deleted, I will begin a user page to edit this article until it is better. I'm asking for you to then help me with it, if that is the case.--Jklein212 (talk) 03:59, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, I'll help if possible. The first, most important question, is regarding notability - indeed, that's what the AfD is all about.
Does this person meet the requirements in Wikipedia:Notability (people). If you think that the person meets the criteria in there, and can produce suitable references, then we can move forward from there. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  04:32, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thank you.--Jklein212 (talk) 04:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm back. Hoping you will come take a second look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonathan Hay (publicist) and read through the updated discussion material, if you don't mind. Thanks in advance. --Jklein212 (talk) 07:36, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Please remember to 'sign' your message by typing ~~~~ on the end; this will add your user name, and the time/date.
Also, it would be helpful if you could give the exact name of the article you are talking about. As I've now looked up your name (Interfan 910), and then looked at your contributions, I'm guessing that you mean Tony gagliano. (To add a link like that to a page, you put [[Tony gagliano]]).
If you look at the article history, you'll see that the 'speedy deletion' request was added by Keystoneridin (talk · contribs) with this edit, but the request was declined by Dank (talk · contribs) with this edit. I have had nothing to do with the article; I just 'welcomed' you.
Good luck with it; if you need any help, please ask me. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  04:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Susan B. Neuman article

5/7/09 Thanks for helping with the repeated reference problem on this page. I deleted the dead link as there are ample references listed at the end of the line and the statement regarding "many published books, articles and presentations" is documented heavily by virtue of the LONG list of citations and references on this page. I added two additional citations in the section for early career, so the tag re: "section needing citations" may be removed. I am not sure if you added this notation, or some other wiki editor did. Thanks again for your helpJourneyWomanSLP (talk) 03:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya; yes, it was me that added that tag; I'll remove it now.
For future reference, you can always remove such tags yourself when you think you've dealt with the issue.
I hope you understood the way I worked on the refs?
I'll try to work on the article again, some time - I've made a note of it; if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me any time. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  03:51, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am not being pushy or desperate, the reason i reverted it even when he gave an explanation is because i added the reason in discussion page. And when i asked for an explanation the reply was a mock and not an explanation. Moulee (talk) 05:56, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand; thank you for your patience, and for listening. A few important points;
""You can edit this page right now" is a core guiding check on everything that we do. We must respect this principle as sacred."
It is absolutely not necessary for an IP user to make an account.
  • The user did use an edit summary, and is quite right in insisting on them. Please make sure that you always use an edit summary.
  • When people disagree with your contributions, relax. There is no deadline. Discuss it with them; as long as you stick to discussing the article, and not the person, then usually it's possible to come to some agreement that everyone is happy with. Strive to assume good faith, even in the face of provocation.
  • If you can't reach a consensus, there are plenty of ways to get help. There is no need to get frustrated, annoyed, angry or anything like that. Stick to concise, clear explanations of why you think xxx should be added/removed, and refer to Wikipedia policy wherever possible.
  • If you're having problems, ask for help. For example, ask other contributors for their opinion - check the major contributors for the article, and leave a note on their talk page asking them to please participate in the discussion on the talk page etc. You could also ask similarly on a relevent project page. The more people who discuss the issue, the easier it becomes to reach a consensus.
I hope this gives some ideas; believe me, I do understand your frustrations. I learned the above lessons the hard way.
In this specific case, looking at this version of the page, it strikes me that all the alternate language versions are starting to make the lede section quite cumbersome and difficult to read. One option, perhaps, would be to not have any of the foreign script details in the first section, but instead to explain them in more detail in the body of the article? I'm not sure about this - I'm just mentioning it as, perhaps, it is an example of the kind of productive discussions that could take place.
If I can help you, in any way at all, please ask me. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  06:55, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thx, i am bit frustated yes, but i am not desperate to edit the page again, but all i wonder is what is wrong if i edit the page based on the solid reference given in the page, it looks like i can remove valid information from a page and bluntly give an explanation that "those lines should not be there because i dont like it".

The other reason i reverted it back soon because, the IP address that edited the page was traced to Bangalore, i am not being judgementel or biased, i am using wikipedia for the past 4 years, though i have not participated in any discussion or editing, i usually follow all the articles i go through the talk page, and most of the Tamil pages or pages related to it are vandalized by IP addresses from Bangalore, I am not acussing but what noticed.

Thank you for your advise and tips. Moulee (talk) 07:14, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, no problems :-) There was no problem with your edit - yes, sourced, etc - the problem was, as soon as someone else removes it, that's the time to stop, discuss, etc. If you repeat the same edit, everything tends to spiral into an edit war, and before you know it accounts are blocked etc.
As far as I can tell, IP addresses 59.92.152.43 and 59.92.188.57 are dynamically allocated addresses, owned by DSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) in New Dehli - if my searching serves me correctly, this is the government-run national backbone, and there is no reverse DNS to pin down where the address originates? If you know more about that, then please do enlighten me. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  07:47, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help reviewing the Rooftops (film) article I was working on. ☺

PeramWiki (talk) 15:01, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all.
I have further edited it today, and added details to the references using cite tags. Please note, these are not at all necessary - I just find that they make the reference format more consistent, and although they look complex, once you are used to it it is actually easier. For further information about this, see my 'tips' in user:chzz/help/refs.
The best way to further improve it would probably be to cite information from books. I see here that there is plenty of information out there, although some of the books are not available to preview over the net, so a trip to a library might be needed.
One thing that I'm sure should be added to the article - it's Wise's last film, except for a TV movie. I'm not quite sure how to word that, and which reference to use...perhaps you have some ideas?
Best of luck; please do ask for help at any time.  Chzz  ►  05:48, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Chzz, are you an admin? I really think that you should be. Wireless Keyboard: Chat 01:59, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm not an admin. You can always check, in [[ - for example, if you put my name in (like this, it shows (in brackets) that I am a WP:ROLLBACK|rollbacker]].
Quicker and neater, if you go to Special:Preferences, 'Gadgets', and checkbox Navigation popups, then whenever you move your mouse over a user name, you'll see their rights in the popup box.
