Alternative
Okay, hold on a moment here. I was looking through wikipedia and only saw articles to alternative country, alternative rock, alternative metal, and alternative hip hop. But back in the day the Depeche Mode, The Cure, and all those were Alternative. So um, where is the article on that? Or is that not the name of that genre? Am I getting something mixed up? Thank you very much and I know this isn't the most intellectual question or questioning.
Where the Feather Breaks at the Tip ~Cardinal Raven (talk)Cardinal Raven —Preceding undated comment added 20:21, 7 May 2009 (UTC).
- Bearing in mind that such labels are subjective, if you look at the articles you can see that Depeche Mode are assigned to "Alternative Dance", while The Cure gets the "Alternative Rock" designation. Possibly you can think of "Alternative" as a higher level classification that comprises several (but probably not all) of the sub-genres which have specific articles. --LarryMac | Talk 20:28, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Where I lived the word "alternative" was never used. Those were New Wave bands. Tempshill (talk) 20:29, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, they probably fit more under the umbrella of "Indie rock" rather than Alternative or New Wave. New Wave generally includes such acts as Elvis Costello and Talking Heads, while Alternative is usually confined to bands like Sonic Youth and the Pixies. I would include The Cure, The Smiths, and New Order as part of the British Indie Rock movement of the 1980's rather than "alternative". Howevr, this is mostly arbitrary, as with all genres, it isn't really a very useful exercise to debate the merits of naming a band as part of one genre or another. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 23:52, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
"indie" is usually reserved for those that are on an Independent Record Label. Looks like Depeche Mode were on an independent label (Mute Records) and so were The Cure (Fiction Records). As with all classifications though like the above say it's very subjective. Ultimately there's no agreed "rules" that i'm aware of (though indie does seem to mostly regularly be reserved for independent record label bands). 194.221.133.226 (talk) 10:39, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Animation depicting island being clearcut
Does anyone remember an animation depicting a machine similar to a combine harvester clear-cutting virgin islands churning out consumer goods behind it as it lays waste to the island? Probably American screened in the UK in the 1970's. Any help is appreciated. 83.33.73.241 (talk) 20:39, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Probably not what you're looking for, but there was an Animated version of The Lorax that came out in the 70s. It involved clear cutting a forest with whimsical technology, and creating fictional consumer goods (Everyone needs a Thneed!) with similar whimsical machinery. APL (talk) 18:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

movie and video game ratings
hi, i'm from india. here, we don't have strict rules and regulations for movies and games adn even a 12-year old can play gta: san andreas, regardless of whatever rating.. i want to know if in the US, the UK and Australia and other developed countries, the video game and movie ratings are stictly adhered to or not.
thanx —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.50.134.5 (talk) 05:48, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Not in England. I believe there is some kind of movement towards making games have "real" ratings (The current ratings are ignored because as far as I'm aware, there is no law to back them up) but it's not happened yet. Vimescarrot (talk) 10:18, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- The guys on the other desk claim otherwise. But I've never seen a shop refuse to sell a minor a copy of GTA. Vimescarrot (talk) 12:50, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Please note this is already being answered on the misc desk as well, and has had more responses. Please do duplicate postings. Gazhiley (talk) 11:19, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- There is an industry ratings board in the U.S. Some large stores like Wal-Mart may restrict sales to minors, but for the most part the ratings serve only as an advisory and are not enforced by any government body. Tomdobb (talk) 12:27, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

New Episode of Lost on Cinco de Mayo
Has a new episode of LOST ever been broadcast (on any station) on Cinco de Mayo? I mean new for whatever country it was broadcast in. Thanks a lot, this is pretty important and I can't find an answer anywhere else. 98.165.40.158 (talk) 22:43, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Not in the United States, because Lost has always been shown on Wednesday in the U.S. and May 5 has not fallen on a Wednesday since the show debuted. Assuming that the show stays on Wednesday, there probably will be a new episode on May 5, 2010. If you just need to find any country that has shown a new episode on any May 5, you might want to try posting on the Lost message board at the Internet Movie Database or somewhere like that, ask if any country shows Lost on a Tuesday, and when you find one, ask if they had a new episode last Tuesday (May 5). --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:20, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Black Tie
What is the brand and style of black ties black ties that punk bands and/or rock bands wear? I think there is a special material that is used for these ties.68.148.149.184 (talk) 23:11, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Well from I see they look like skinny-ties (i.e. very thin all the way with very little increase in width towards the bottom) and usually they look like they're made of some non-reflective fabric - maybe wool (probably not) or something felt-like. Some sites have polyester ones but I think they'd shine too much. ny156uk (talk) 23:45, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Given the DIY ethic of most punk bands, there is probably not one industry standard tie. My guess is "whatever was at the store they stumbled into and thought looked kinda cool" is close to universal... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 00:10, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Trying to remember an 80's music video
I'm trying to remember the name of a song that went with a video that I really loved back in the 1980's-- it was probably around 1985 or so. ("Blue Jean" by David Bowie was played around the same time.) The song was not "Tender is the Night" although it had a similar feel, and the video was for the most part semi-deserted city streets at night, I think during a rainstorm. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any ideas? Thanks! 69.209.192.87 (talk) 06:32, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
That would be the end of '85 or start of '86. Did The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and The Range have a video? That would fit the time and style. Britmax (talk) 07:35, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- "Vienna" by Ultravox? Wasn't "mostly" empty streets, but there were a couple of memorable shots. Tempshill (talk) 15:07, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Star Trek - faking space
How did the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation make it appear that beyond the windows of Ten-Forward was outer space?
Thanks. Vranak (talk) 14:33, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

- Is there a reason to think it wasn't the standard green screen approach? Tempshill (talk) 16:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- It doesn't even need green screen, just some black material with white dots painted on it. They would need green screen if there was anything moving around outside, otherwise they can just use a matte painting. --Tango (talk) 17:00, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- Tango, I question how much Star Trek you've seen. I don't think they used matte paintings in that way. Typically if there's something outside worth seeing it's going to be moving. A common tactic was to have everyone hanging around having drinks with a ship parked out front, and then suddenly the ship explodes.
- I think the 'trick' to making the black-boards-with-white-dots technique work is for the black boards to be pretty far back from the window. That way as the camera moves the dots don't look like they're printed on the glass, they're obviously behind it. APL (talk) 03:20, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

- They could also stick other things out there. The same set is the Federation President's office in Star Trek VI, and there is sunshine out the window. It's magic! Adam Bishop (talk) 19:00, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- They used cardboard painted black with stars, and bent it curved so that when the camera moved it gave the appearance of the starts being far away, as they could seemingly move from different angles out of the window —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.44.54.169 (talk) 19:04, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- That's how they normally do it, but they can also blue screen it if there's something interesting outside (Like a romulan ship) or if the Enterprise is at warp speed.
- I've read that they told the writers to try to arrange the script so that whenever possible the Enterprise dropped out of Warp before they did big scenes in Ten Forward, or the captain's ready room. Simply because it's easy to put the black boards with white dots in the windows, but blue-screening is an extra expense. APL (talk) 03:20, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

- There's no reason why they couldn't use multiple techniques throughout the series. Most deleted scenes and bloopers tracks I've seen from TNG have green screen behind the windows though. 206.131.39.6 (talk) 16:21, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

ITV.com
What is wrong with ITVplayer? It it terrible compared to those on BBC and channel 4. Before it was only changing the picture on screen every few seconds, or going blank entirely, and occasionally skipping entire sections. I have since downloaded something that is supposed to make it run better. Mostly it is better, but now it stops to load about every 20 seconds, which is just as annoying. Is there anything I can do to fix this too?
148.197.114.207 (talk) 21:22, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- ITV uses Silverlight, whereas the BBC and Channel 4 use Flash is the main technical difference. But I think it's more likely due to the number of servers and bandwidth they have available (or just that ITV has no money and is generally rubbish in contrast to the BBC with its enormous budget for their website and for R&D). You could try watching at quiet times (late at night/early morning, or maybe during the day when people are at work) if there's a particular show you want to see. --Maltelauridsbrigge (talk) 09:51, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Top female athletes close or better than top males.
I saw an interesting stat at Shot put#Top 10 performers: only 7 males have a better best than the best female. I also remember Frith van der Merwe finishing 15th overall in 1989 Comrades ultramarathon, and was wondering in what other sports this is the case. Possibly climbing competition, show jumping, netball? -- Jeandré, 2009-05-09t23:34z
- Women seem to be roughly equal to or better than men in Long-distance swimming. Many of the top open-water swimmers worldwide are Women. It seems that in VERY long endurance events, physical differences decrease. Also, consider events like equestrian sports or car racing where women have no inherent physical disadvantage, though there are clear social reasons why women don't necessarily choose to compete in some of these events, it is clear that there are no physical barriers for women doing as well as or better than men. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 03:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- You need to notice that women use a much lighter shotput - 4kg instead of the men's 16 lbs. I am not sure that Jayron assumption holds up well. Marathon world record progression shows that the current women's record time was surpassed by men way back in 1958. Checking the last three international triathlon races - in two of them the fastest women did not beat the slowest man. In the other race, only one of the 66 men's finishers was slower than the women's winner. Looking at the U.S. records for long-distance swimming[1], men's records were almost always faster than women's in the 1980's but slower in the late 90-present. I don't know why, perhaps related to the small number of competitors? Rmhermen (talk) 04:02, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Looing for Gunsmoke episode
I dont' know which, but a long time ago, I recall a Gunsmoke episode where Marshal Dillon controls a small mob (a couple dozen people, maybe) by deputizing them - tricking them into raising their right hands and afgreeing to what he says, before they know it. this is to prevent them from exacting vengeance on someone before the law can deal with things.
Does anyone remember the episode I'm talking about? The only other clue I can give is, I think it was in color, but there were so many, I can't go ghrough all of them.

In Flash Gordon (film), Ming the Merciless bore a striking resemblance to Anton LaVey. Did any of the make-up artists look at pictures of LaVey to get some ideas, or what?69.203.157.50 (talk) 01:45, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Probably the other way around. As you can see here, Ming looked just as merciless back in the 1930s, round about when LaVey was born. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:38, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- (after edit conflict) Charles B. Middleton's portrayal of Ming already looked quite a bit like that in 1936, when LaVey was six years old. According to the article on Flash Gordon (serial) "Ming is characterised in the mould of Fu Manchu in this serial." This gallery shows Ming evolving from Alex Raymond's first drawings in 1934 up to Max von Sydow's version you mentioned. I think the LaVey resemblance works the other way around, if at all. The article on Satanism says that "Nerds who idolize 'The Comic Book Guy' on the Simpsons constantly point out LaVey looks like Ming The Merciless, a character from a comic strip that hasn't run in a zillion years and no one gives a shit about". ---Sluzzelin talk 03:50, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

- Lol, nope. I knew I had heard it before, but that didn't really help me much, as I am not Biréli Lagrène who apparently is able to memorize and retrieve every single melody after having heard it once. The melodic ductus and harmony in the beginning sounded intentionally reminiscent of Prokofiev, but later on everything switches to a more modern "pop-songy" style. That plus the choice of some instruments not usually heard in a symphony orchestra (accordion, vibraphone, ...) led me to assume it was a film score by a Russian composer. The second hit of "russian" + "film" + "composer" + "waltz" led me to Petrov. The rest was youtube. --Sluzzelin talk 21:26, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Movies with similar themes
I once read an article here about films that shared similar themes and were released close to one another but I can't find the article anywhere anymore. If I remember correctly, two of the movies it compared was Next and Deja vu. Did the article get deleted? if not, where is it? —David13579 (talk) 04:18, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, it got deleted. — Kieff | Talk 04:37, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- This is not something that happens every now and then (and is therefore notable). It is very frequent (and non-notable). Whenever one studio sinks a lot of money into a specific theme, at least one other studio will attempt to cash in on the buzz and rush a movie with a similar theme. Then, there is the debate over who should go first. It is possible that the one that goes first will take most of the money, leaving very little for the follower. It is also possible that the one that goes first will increase interest, increasing profits for the follower. So, you cannot claim that the one released first is the original project. It may be the second project that was pushed to release first. -- kainaw™ 14:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Song from MTV's the Paper
The last episode of The Paper features a song (beginning at 2:36 of this clip [2]) that I've never been able to identifty. I believe the lyrics are as follows:
I sent you a letter, telegram too
Answer your phone baby I need to talk to you
We can’t go on with me just loving you
Open your mailbox baby there’s my last letter to you
I need no picture to remind me of you
And all the wonderful moments baby I spent with you
Leave me my letter
This is my last letter baby
Oh darling this is goodbye
It bears at least a passing resemblance to Ben E. King's "Seven Letters" but I don't think that's it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.132.225.118 (talk) 18:57, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Sparkly vampires
Roflrazzi ... Frequently makes reference to sparkly vampires. What are they talking about? v_v 90.193.232.41 (talk) 19:41, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- Though I haven't read it myself, I've heard comment that the vampires in Twilight don't combust in sunlight; rather, they 'sparkle'. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 20:05, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah...and they may be referring specifically to the even worse movie version, where they sort of just look sweaty. Adam Bishop (talk) 00:45, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Robinson Crusoe Songs
Does anyone have any suggestions for songs to be used in a pantomime production of Robinson Crusoe?

- Heh, I edit-conflicted you on the same idea, O fast-fingered feathery one!
- Before Friday's arrival, perhaps "Tea for One", "Message in a Bottle", or "Nothing Ever Happens".
- (I guess I'm not that familiar with the concept of pantomime. Is it mandatory to change/parodize the lyrics of a famous song to fit the theme? If so, it will take more inspiration than what I came up with). ---Sluzzelin talk 23:29, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Penn & Teller on The Simpsons
The Penn & Teller article mentions an appearance by the duo on The Simpsons. Did Teller speak during the appearance? If not, did he even show up to any studio for the recording of the other characters? Dismas|(talk) 03:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, according to the Simpsons Wiki's page on "Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder". [3] IMDb's cast of that same episode lists "(voice)" too.[4] I don't know what Teller said though. I'm reminded of Marcel Marceau's famous "Non" in Silent Movie. ---Sluzzelin talk 04:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, the article on Teller explains: Penn and Teller have a cameo as themselves on an episode of The Simpsons, titled Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder, where he accidentally breaks character and verbally berates Homer, who expresses surprise in his ability to speak. Teller then expresses great anxiety, saying "Oh no, now Penn's gonna beat me!" ---Sluzzelin talk 04:17, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm. Thanks! Guess I didn't look far enough... Dismas|(talk) 04:58, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
