WELY (94.5 FM and 1450 AM "End of the Road Radio") are radio stations based in the small town of Ely, Minnesota. WELY serves the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of far northern Minnesota.
It is known for its quirky, eclectic, community-oriented programming. WELY broadcasts a wide range of material, from traditional polkas to rock music to zany wilderness "shout outs" for people camping in the surrounding wilderness.
History
WELY was owned by retired CBS broadcaster Charles Kuralt from 1995 to 1997, at which point it was purchased by Janice Erickson, a Twin Cities transplant. In 2005, it was purchased by a local band of Ojibwe Indians, the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa.[1]
