The 2008–09 Serie A season is the seventy-seventh since its establishment. It began on 30 August 2008 and will end on 31 May 2009, with the announcement of the list of fixtures made on 25 July 2008. Twenty teams are contesting the league, of which 17 are returning from the previous season, and three (Chievo Verona, Bologna and Lecce) were promoted from Serie B 2007-08.

The 20 clubs represent 13 different regions. The most represented region is Lombardy with three teams: Atalanta, Milan and Internazionale. Piedmont, Liguria, Tuscany, Lazio and Sicily feature 2 teams each while Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Puglia, Calabria and Sardinia are represented by one team each. There is a record number of southern teams in the top division with 6 teams: Cagliari, Catania, Lecce, Napoli, Palermo and Reggina.

The new match ball will be the Nike T90 Omni.

On May 16, 2009 Internazionale won the league by holding an unassailable lead after AC Milan's loss away to Udinese.
