Felipe Melo de Carvalho (born 26 August, 1983 in Volta Redonda) is a Brazilian footballer who currently plays as a defensive midfielder for Italian Serie A club Fiorentina. He is particularly well known for his aggressiveness, having collected 17 yellow cards and 3 red cards in his first Serie A season.
Club career
He previously played for Flamengo, Cruzeiro and Grêmio in his native Brazil. He then moved to Spain by joining Real Mallorca, Racing Santander followed by another move this time to Almería.
After a successful first season at Almería, Melo agreed to transfer to Italian side Fiorentina in an €8 million transfer for the 2008-09 season.[1] This was confirmed after Almeria's match against Recreativo de Huelva in the Spanish league.[2] He made his debut in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Slavia Prague, and scored his first goal in a viola shirt against Atalanta in the Serie A. He is currently being linked with a switch to the Premier League, but has stated he doesnt want to play in England.
International career
On January 27, 2009, Brazil coach Dunga included Melo in his 22-man squad to face Italy on February 8,[3] which also signalled his first ever call-up to the Brazil squad.[4] Melo started and played the whole 90 minutes in a friendly against Italy. He made his competitive international debut on the March 29, 2009 against Ecuador in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.[5] He then scored his first international goal on April 1, 2009 in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Peru in Porto Alegre.[6] On May 2009, he was selected in Brazil squad for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.[7]
