Stéphane Mbia Etoundi (born May 20, 1986 in Yaoundé) is a Cameroonian football player who plays for French Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais.
Career
Stéphane began his playing career at the famous Kadji Sports Academy in Douala, Cameroon where fellow Cameroon internationals Samuel Eto'o, Carlos Kameni and Eric Djemba Djemba played. In 2004 he moved to France, to join Stade Rennais.
Mbia emerged into the Rennes first team in the 2005-06 season, making a handful of appearances. The Cameroonian scored his first Ligue 1 goal for the club in November 2006 against champions Olympique Lyonnais.
Mbia has since become an integral part of the Rennes setup, leading to interest from other clubs around Europe. On 27 August, 2008 it was reported that English Premiership side Everton were keen on signing the Cameroonian, but his club were unwilling to sell.[1]
In September 2008 Mbia reportedly pleaded with his club to allow him to leave in the 2009 January transfer window, as he wished to move to Arsenal.[2]
International Career
Mbia played international football at junior level for Cameroon. He was part of the Cameroon squad for the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Finland, where his side exited in the group stage.
He made his debut for the Cameroon national team in 2005. He was part of the squad for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, where Mbia scored twice against Tunisia in the quarterfinal.
Mbia was part of the Cameroon squad for the 2008 Olympics in China, playing in all four of his teams matches, and scoring once against Honduras.
